Grabbys Nominations 2011: A First Look
Now that the Grabbys Awards nominations have been announced it's time to take our first close look and see what we can take away from them. What turned out to be a very big year of surprising hits, major changes in front of the camera and behind the scenes, and more is reflected in these nominations. As we mentioned before, there are also some shocking omissions some of which may reflect the politics of the awards process.
Once again we can't help but notice in these nominations that online video sites & companies have increasingly influenced the direction of the gay porn biz. In 2008 there were zero number of web-based categories. In 2009 three web-based categories were introduced and those same categories remained in 2010 with several web-based studio productions making it into the regular nominations. This year there are ELEVEN web-based categories-- including Best Porn Blog in which we are so honored to be nominated.
While the number of web-based categories increased a few other categories were either eliminated or changed. Gone this year are Best Leather Movie and Hottest Cock categories. There may have been a shortage of genuine "leather" movies this year to warrant a separate category but you will find them in the Fetish & Fetish Extreme categories. Obviously there wasn't a shortage of "hot cocks" so we can't explain that category's omission. Best Cumshot & Best Rimming scenes are now known as Hottest Cum Scene & Hottest Ass-Eating Scene respectively. The one addition to the "regular" categories is the Best Non-Sexual category.
As for the count of movie nominations Getting Levi's Johnson led the pack with 16, followed by Brutal with 11, and Raising The Bar & Little Big League IV with 10 each. It will take some time to do a count on the studio counts but you can bet the respective studios will be posting their nomination totals very soon. We can tell you that thanks to the company's feature film output Randy Blue wound up with 11 nominations total--virtually unheard of just a few years ago.
As for individual awards Adam Killian again leads the pack thanks to his doing double duty as performer & videographer in several productions. There are also a great many performers this year who have at least two nominations as individuals and/or as participants in scenes.
Of note with three or more nominations are Angelo Marconi (5), Austin Wilde (4), Benjamin Bradley (5), Brandon Bangs (3), Brandon Lewis (3), Brian Hanson (3), Brenn Wyson (5), Brent Corrigan (3), Brent Everett (5), Drew Cutler (4), Casey Monroe (3), Gavin Waters (3), Landon Conrad (3), Landon Mycles/Marcus Mojo (4), Riley Price (3), Rod Daily (6), Samuel Colt (4) Shane Frost (3), and Steven Daigle(5). Of special note is buddy Steve Cruz whose movies have many nominations as does he as performer & director.
Our friends Spencer Reed & Conner Habib received two nominations but frankly should have been nominated more. And at the very least Chris Porter should have been nominated as Best Newcomer---BIG oversight. Same with studly ginger muscle boy JR Matthews & super-talented Parker London. We are happy to see that friends Kennedy Carter, Matthew Rush & others received at least two nominations.
Lastly there's the strange omission of Lucas Entertainment. Yes it IS possible that the company didn't submit any nominations but no Mr Pam. Really?
In the coming weeks we'll be taking even more looks at the nominations and spotlighting a few more individuals. Stay tuned...
