The New Superman
Warner Bros. has announced that Brit actor Henry Cavill will be the new Superman in the reboot movie Superman: Man of Steel to be directed by Zach Snyder. Of course there's no casting choice that would satisfy everyone, let alone comic book & Superman fans like us. But it's way too early to make a judgment call on this one. We don't know what the story is or how director Snyder is going to approach the super-hero.
We do like Henry Cavill's good looks & charming screen presence both of which have been on display in a variety of roles. It also seems that if WB & Snyder are going for a Superman with a slight edge Cavill could fit the part. He also has "action hero" credentials too. For example he's playing Theseus in the "war of the gods" movie The Immortals (see above). From this movie at least we know he's willing to work out to look heroic. He also goes shirtless in the upcoming The Cold Light Of Day thriller, with debatable results.
Ok, so there are some things that need to be worked on too. Obviously Henry Cavill will be putting on an American accent. He'll probably be de-scruffed too. As we mentioned above he does have heroic build potential although. We hope he builds up a bit and that Zack Snyder doesn't go for the muscle suit or body armor super-hero costume look. Superman's iconic costume can be played with somewhat but not to the point of being unrecognizable. We shall see.
Isn't interesting that Henry Cavill was in the running for the role several years ago well before Bryan Singer was named as director for Superman Returns? When Brett Ratner & McG almost took on the director's role Cavill was on the short list of actors to play the hero. One of the big problems here though was that these directors' vision of Superman was very far removed from the comic book. Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) at least has experience with comic book adaptations and has done a very good job of being faithful both in story and visuals to his source material.
Let's see how this all works out.
