The A-List: NY

We got an e-mail this week from LOGO promoting its new "docu-reality"series The A-List: New York which premieres in October and frankly we don't know what to make out of this one. It's produced by the same people that brought you The Real Housewives of Atlanta and follows "members of New York's gay elite plus their families, best girlfriends, and pocket dogs (natch) as they navigate being fabulous in the city". Yes, we know you're grimacing right now just reading that description. It gets better (or worse depending on your point of view):
"Follow their tangled friendships, rivalries and aspirations as they hop from benefit to beach house to pied-a-terre, dropping serious coin on toys for grown ups all along the way. The A-List explores the excess and envy of a new population, taking its rightful place alongside the greatest of guilty pleasure television."
The series features guys like Reichen Lehmkuhl the reality star turned actor, writer & model and photographer Mike Ruiz so the producers aren't pulling nobodies out of thin air and suddenly elevating them to A-list status. We do have to ask: when did Reichen move to NY and become an A-list gay celeb? We're very curious to find out if we'll like these and other gays on this series during and after it airs. So far the comments posted on the LOGO websites are negative & snarky and we find ourselves agreeing with a few of them.
First of all, it seems that people watch certain reality series like Real Housewives of ___, Big Brother, etc so they can feel superior to these people whose lives are often resemble train wrecks. Will we still be entertained & amused when we're watching gay men in these situations. Or will we simply loathe them?
In spite of our obvious misgivngs we will watch one or more episodes of The A-List: New York if only to see if it is as annoying as it looks. As you can see from the trailers there will be probably lots of drama (some real, some created) but we'll just have to wait until Oct 4 to find out more.
