90210 Reveals Gay Character
We got another surprise this week when it was confrmed that the character who is coming out of the closet on 90210 this coming season is Teddy, played by Trevor Donovan. As you recall (Who's Coming Out On 90210?) early last month the producers confirmed that one of three existing male characters on 90210 would be coming out this season and a guessing game began as to who it would be. Zap2It actually broke the story a week ago One of those unnamed sources deals) and EW's Michael Ausiello confirmed it yesterday.
Teddy was our fave in the "who's coming out?" mystery if only so we would be able to see Trevor Donovan shirtless and possibly making out with another guy. Apparently he was also the audience pick in a recent poll in spite of the character's womanizing ways. Actually, according to Ausiello's story the producers felt that the "womanizing" aspect to Teddy's character made it more logical that this was a way of overcompensating for his gay secret.
It was also revealed this week that Teddy is not going to be one of those sanitized gay characters who doesn't get any action. It will be revealed that Teddy has been repressing his feelings for a long time but he doesn't have some "instant awakening". In his storyline something happens in his life that causes him to act impulsively and hook up with Ian (a new character played by Kyle Riabko) Things develop from this point. Ian is apparently going to be around for this third season and the Ausiello article reveals that he's a "self-confident, funny guy who is very much out and comfortable with his gayness." Plus he's been in a relationship before so Ian will be more of a "role model" type.
When the producers told actor Trevor Donovan about the direction of his character he apparently was excited and flattered about it because he thinks the story of Teddy's "journey" will mean a lot to young viewers who are coming out and/or learning to be who they are. Of course this is TV and they're working for ratings but still it's a good thing overall. You can bet we'll be tuning in when the season of 90210 premieres on September 13.
As for Kyle Riabko he's a very cute 23 year old Canadian pop singer & actor who earlier this year joined the Broadway cast of Hair.
One last note. Michael Steger who plays Navid (one of the three 90210 characters in the who's coming out game) will be gay on TV anyway. This Sunday August 22 he guests on True Blood and has an "encounter" with Russel Edgington (Denis O'Hare). If you aren't up to date on the show we won't spoil the reason for the encounter--just catch up and tune in.
