The Week Ahead
This coming week is going to be a pretty darn big one--in wildly different ways. On one hand we've got the gay marriage issue once again coming to a crossroads. On the other we've got the much-delayed but highly anticipated GAYVN Awards nominations announcement. And Jack Manly will be eagerly and anxiously waiting.
Last week when Judge Walker made his announcement about allowing gay marriages to go forward in California starting on Wednesday August 18 at 5PM it was as though fireworks went off on Twitter. You didn't have to turn on the news or be outside the courthouse when the announcement came because people were tweeting the news like mad. Of course the initial hoorahs were met with some disappointment at the idea of another week's delay but the level of excitement grew again once legal analysts came forward to explain that an appeal on the stay wasn't even likely to get heard.
So here we are just a couple more days away from the possibility that same sex marriages will be allowed one again here in California. Yes, there is still the possibility that the the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals will not allow the stay to expire and that it might not rule as Judge Walker did. Plus, the anti-marriage equality people aren't likely to give up until it reaches the US Supreme Court. So we remain hopeful & confident but prepared for a long battle just in case.
On Friday August 20 the GAYVN Awards will be announced after months of delays plus a few weeks of false starts. This has been one of the strangest & most unpredictable pre-nominations periods in our years of paying attention to the GAYVN Awards and this is not likely to change once the nominations are announced. As we mentioned before the eligibility period has been extended so there are going to be some major surprises in terms of inclusions and omissions. With a little over a month until the awards the campaigning & voting is going to be crazy. We sure hope that the awards people are prepared for some quick tabulations!
We'll be standing by ready to bring you the nominations when they're announced and try to give you as much of an analysis as possible including our predictions & faves. Stay tuned....
