Torchwood Is Coming Back!

Good news! Torchwood is returning for a 4th season! The Doctor Who sci-fi spin-off series featuring openly gay actor John Barrowman as the omnisexual Captain Jack Harkness will soon go into production on a new 10-part series. Starz! is providing the extra funding so that the new series will become a reality. Barrowman will return along with Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper while show creator Russell T Davies will head the team of writers.
For those not in the know Torchwood is centered around the Cardiff, Wales branch of the Torchwood Institute which deals with incidents involving aliens. Filmed on location in Wales Barrowman's character Captain Jack headed a team of operatives with plenty of opportunity to deal with this alien incidents since there's a space-time rift that runs through Cardiff. Through the first three series of the show there were cast & character changes, romances, major deaths, and more. The third series titled "Children of Earth" left things hanging a bit so it's going to be interesting to see what happens next.
Torchwood first started production in late 2006 but it was while before US audiences got to see it on BBCAmerica. Fortunately the wait for the second & third series of the show wasn't as long. This time around it looks like the input of Starz!may mean we'll get to see the fourth series asap. The new series will actually be a three-way co-production between BBC Wales, Starz and BBC Worldwide, which distributes the show. In addition the new series will be executive produced by Davies and the Los Angeles-based BBC Worldwide Productions executives Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner.
As a result of this collaborative effort the new series will also feature location filming in the US and around the world. This may mean that John Barrowman will be returning to LA again, a few months after doing a guest stint on Desperate Housewives. Awhile ago there was some talk of making an American version of Torchwood with the idea of getting Barrowman to reprise his role. It actually wouldn't have been the first time that a Russell T Davies show had been adapted for American TV. That distinction went to Queer As Folk.
As for the Starz! influence we can at least be somewhat guaranteed that the gay & homoerotic elements of Torchwood will remain. After all Starz is behind Spartacus: Blood and Sand. In fact one of those involved in Torchwood recently commented that with Starz involved the new series will be "bigger & bolder". No air dates have been announced but we're VERY excited and can't wait.
