Countdown To The Grabbys Pt 2
It's time again for another look at this year's Grabby Awards nominations. This time our spotlight is on the technical side of the nominations--those aspects of a porn movie many of you probably pay as much attention to as you do to performers and their scenes. However, these nominations DO mean a great deal to those people behind the camera whose often hard and creative work is taken for granted.
The BEST BOX COVER category may be hard to fathom but consider this: a box cover has a multi=purpose responsibility. Obviously it has to look attractive and be an eye-catcher. It also has to give the porn buyer/renter a tantalizing ideas of what the movie is all about and who is prominently featured. Plus it has to interest porn watching veterans AND new viewers. As with other categories we get the majority of nominees but one in particular has us perplexed (can you guess which one?)
Among our faves here are Green Door, Taken to the Lowest Level, Skuff 4, and The Visitor. These look the most like real movies and are well-composed. Men of Israel & Obsession are up there too by virtue of the gorgeous guys on the covers. The first suffers from the overly large Lucas logo while the second doesn't really say anything about the movie.
Videographers virtually do the same thing as their mainstream counterparts cinematographers---they capture a director's vision on film & video. Over the past few years several videographers have developed their own individual reputations AND a following so it's likely you'll recognize some of the names nominated here. In addition these individuals sometimes do double-duty as director and videographer. In the case of Adam Killian he's also a multi-nominated performer! Killian has three nominations in the BEST VIDEOGRAPHY category and in each case we can see his signature style. Adam Killian has an ability to get very close & intimate with his performers without distracting them. Every single one of the nominees in this category has done a remarkable job but we think Killian's time has come.
As with videography art direction has also evolved considerably in porn. In looking over the nominees in the BEST ART DIRECTION category you can't help but notice how all of the movies here made a special & ambitious effort to create a location, a time, and other realities. We'd be hard-pressed to pick a favorite here but we predict that Taken to the Lowest Level (Channel 1 Releasing) has an edge.
The BEST STILL PHOTOGRAPHER category is another that many of you may not appreciate given that you might not see some of these pics. It's important to note that many directors and studios are employing well known & published photographers and this may give them an edge. Joe Oppedisano has used Steve Cruz as his "muse" in several books so it's know surprise the photographer was used in the Cruz/Gobo Mustang collaborations. As such Joe may have an advantage here in addition to being very talented. Because this category is SO subjective we prefer not to make a pick.
