Countdown To The Grabbys
The Grabbys Awards are coming up at the end of next month (May 29) and as is our custom at Jack Manly we're taking a closer look at the nominations with a few predictions and/or choices thrown in whenever
possible. The prediction part of our Grabbys spotlights is going to be a little harder this year since there the lack of GAYVN Awards results (pushed back to September) has left us without voting trends. On the bright side this will make the Grabbys that much more suspenseful.
Today we start with the internet categories Best Pornstar Website, Best Pornstar Blog and Best Web Based Porn Site as well as the crossover category Best Pro/Am Video. We're still a bit surprised that there aren't more categories in this genre given the growth & influence of online video sites. True, many of these sites are producing DVDs that are getting nominated with the studio productions but a few more categories and perhaps a separate show might be in order in the future.
Last year's winners Steve Cruz (website) & Diesel Washington (blog) have been nominated once again but things are a bit screwy here: both Steve & Diesel are nominated in the website category. Both guys really should be in the blog category, especially DW because the nominated web address IS a blog. The same holds true for Johnny Hazzard & Brent Corrigan. Steve Cruz' url isn't correct but his site is more of a "gateway" to his other sites & blogs. The others in this category are probably more what the Grabbys had in mind: porn stars who sites have original video content.
On the other hand the Best Pornstar Blog isn't as problematic. That said not all the nominees here are consistent as bloggers go. Next year it might make more sense for the Grabbys to expand the category or really set up stricter rules about eligibility. There are a great many porn stars who regularly post on their blogs and provide fans with lots of stuff to look at and read. Naturally it's tempting to create categories to accommodate social networking sites & services but you know the year that they include them they'll be replaced with something new.
The Best Web-Based Porn Site category has the expected top flight nominees although we're bemused that a couple of lesser-known sites wangled their way into the nominations. We're sure that nothing under-handed went on here, just people working the system to their advantage. Here's a recap of the nominees:
AWOL Marines. Yes, a military-themed site featuring supposed real soldier guys making money on the side.
Broke Straight Boys. Title tells all. Straight guys who need to make extra money by going gay. It's been around for awhile and has produced a few stars along the way.
Cocky Boys. It was a really good year for this site having teamed up with Bel Ami to co-produce videos with stars from both sites. At the same time CB continued to feature a number of hotties in simple, yet well-produced videos. It too got into the business of producing DVD compilations.
College Dudes 24/7. This Florida-based company never fails to find very hot guys and put then in equally hot videos. We've mentioned many times that CD247 has almost become the go-to site for studios casting newcomers in their movies. Take a look at current stars who started out here and you'll be amazed.
Corbin Fisher. Even those this company has expanded considerably the past two years it hasn't lost sight of its original focus on super-hot jocks in great videos. Last year it too teamed with Bel Ami and by doing so raised the bar for what websites can do.
Cumbuddies. This is an unknown entity to us but it looks like a your basic live online chat site. Again we're not exactly sure how this one belongs with the other nominees. Just sayin'.
Frat Men. This mostly solo video site has always prided itself on presenting jocks that are universally attractive. Remarkably simple videos that are so seductive that you get lost in them.
On The Hunt. Manhunt's online video site has evolved quite a bit but the basic premise is essentially the same: real Manhunt members having their hook-ups filmed by real porn stars. There are more recognizable faces these days but that's okay with us because the sex is always hot and that's our first priority.
Randy Blue. Do we really have to remind you about this site? Think of all the amazing stars that have started here, the movie length videos, the site's new DVD line, live shows, etc. It was a good year for RB and it looks ike 2010 will be even better.
Sean Cody. This top site never ceases to impress us and for good reason. It's simply the gold standard. Yet SC never seems to win awards and they seemingly don't mind.
Who will win here? It all depends on which site has the best "get out the vote" efforts and marketing strategy because comparing the high quality sites here is the old "apple & oranges" thing..
As for the Best Pro-Am Video award Lucas Entertainment & Active Duty dominate with a combined total of 6 out of 9 nominations. Given that the lines are increasingly blurring here between pro & amateur we wouldn't be surprised to see this evolve into something quite different next year.
