Pulling The Plug On Don't Ask, Don't Tell

It may have taken longer that many of us would have liked but it looks like the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" law may finally be ending.  President Obama and the Democratic Party undoubtedly lost a lot of good will from the LBGT community thanks to a lot of foot-dragging on ending this ridiculously discriminatory military policy and repealing the Defense of Marriage Act. It will take a lot to get it back, but ending DADT is the step in the right direction.

Next week Defense Secretary Gates & the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, are supposedly going to introduce an "implementation plan" at hearings on the matter. This apparently will the measures that the military is going to take before the law is changed. If the GOP blocks this measure, watch out. Already perpetual old crank John McCain has openly opposed repealing DADT and the right-wing media has also started mouthing off about it. McCain is being challenged in his GOP primary by a right-wing nutjob so he's had to move even further to the right to keep his seat. Given that daughter Meghan and wife Cindy are involved in the Adam Bouska NoH8 campaign we'd say that John McCain is going to have some explaining to do during the primary.

We're so happy for out LGBT friends in the military and those who want to serve but have been unable to do so. We also hope that those who have been discharged already get their jobs back as they should. Otherwise you'll be seeing the lawsuits fly!

Of course this can only be considered a beginning. DOMA also needs to be repealed and it's been promised as much. Again Democrats can't afford to wait on this or else a disillusioned LGBT community will avoid voting for them. It's perfectly understandable but we hope enough people realize that allowing right-wingers into office is a bad move.

This past week the defense rested in the federal appeals court trial on the overturning of Prop 8 and the judge will be hearing closing arguments in March before he decides. It may be wishful thinking but it sounded like the defense had a hard time arguing for the heinous proposition. Yes, we know that win or lose this will undoubtedly go to the Supreme Court. Whether the SCOTUS hears it or not , we shall see.
