Adam Lambert Makes A Point..Sort Of
We think even Adam Lambert would agree that the song & his vocals last night were not up to par with the performances he's given before. The staging was also mindlessly busy and annoying and it was aggravated by some confusing camera work. However, amidst all this mess Adam Lambert went full steam ahead and took the raunchy road to Controversy Town. He had dancers on leashes, had one of them mime fellatio on him, he grabbed his own crotch, planted a big kiss on another male member of the band, and gave the camera a finger.
As you might expect ABC didn't air much of this (at least tried not to) to West Coast viewers but by then the angry calls were coming in (along with bad reviews) and Adam Lambert was once again the topic of conversation. He was vehemently chastised for his behavior and in doing so he had trumped JLo's fall and Whitney's return (although it's doubtful he could outshine Lady Gaga). You just know that he was thinking "okay was that gay enough for you?"
In an interview after the show Adam was asked if the AMA people knew beforehand what would transpire on the show and Adam said it was mostly spontaneous & unplanned. We're pretty sure at the very least he had the germ of an idea in his mind about this and went with it. We're also sure that he knew he'd get flack for it. It was the interviewer who planted the seed that maybe all this ensuing hubbub was hypocritical, (especially since his performances was "edited" for the coast ) and he went with it in later comments.
Adam Lambert may not have originated the point but it was a valid one. Britney, Madonna, JLo, Prince, etc have all pushed the limits and gotten away with it----and it many cases applauded for it. When Brit & Madge kissed it was a highlight. When two guys do it (as Adam did with a male bandmate) it's horrifying.
We've been following the comments on various blogs and as we expected it seemed that the performance was getting roundly criticized. Many thought that the controversy was lame too. It wasn't to hard to figure out that those who are Adam Lambert's fans were on his side. Those who dislike him, gay or straight, also disliked everything about last night. The point remains that you can love his performance or hate it but it shouldn't be discriminated against or censored if there's a gay element.
