On Levi Johnston, Playgirl & The Demise of Gay Publications
By now you all probably know that the much-anticipated Playgirl appearance by Levi Johnston will NOT feature frontal nudity as was publicized. It is likely that interested parties will get to see something peeking behind his signature prop hockey stick but we'll all have to wait until Saturday when the pics go online at Playgirl. Interestingly it seems that this whole thing may have spurred a revival for the print edition of this magazine. We read that the newsstand version of the Levi issue will come out in January and the company is seriously considering putting out more issues during the year---four to be exact. It seems the magazine intends to put out more semi-celebrity "studded" issues that would sell as print editions.
It's strangely & sadly ironic that while this wacky fervor over Levi Johnston & his Playgirl magazine shoot is occupying much of the attention of the gay press, the gay press itself has lost some of their own. It was reported that Window Media (one-time publisher of Genre) has shut down operations thereby ceasing publication of LGBT periodicals Washington Blade, Southern Voice, Houston Voice, South Florida Blade, David Atlanta and The 411 Magazine. These were vital & important publications for the LGBT community in the south and in the nation's capital and their demise is going to have far-reaching implications.
So while we all work ourselves into a frenzy over Levi Johnston let's remember that while we enjoy him as a foil to the ever-annoying Sarah Palin, there isn't much more than fleeting enterainment value to his publicity-grabbing lifestyle.
