The Unzipped Files
Both Men Magazine & Freshmen will change to a new expanded format and become quarterly print publications after the Novembers issues. However, premium content (daily, weekly & monthly will continue at ClubFreshmen.com and MenMachine.com. In addition both these of these sites will be relaunched with some new features that, according to Unzipped, will "amaze you".
Not only will Unzipped Magazine continue as a monthly but it was also have added pages to "incorporate the hot dudes—young and old—that everyone loves." Plus, all those that subscribed to Men Magazine & Freshmen will now receive Unzipped in their mailboxes. By the way, Unzipped.net will also continue as an online source for news, info, and video entertainment
Today Unzipped also clarified another matter---what would happen to this year's Man Of The Year contest? The good news is that the contest will go on as scheduled--online voting is still going on and there are paper ballots in the September issue of Men for the convenience of subscribers & newsstand buyers (by the way, the deadline is still October 31) The 2009 Man of the Year will be announced in the February 2010 issue of Unzipped magazine so subscribers of Men will still get the big issue.
Unzipped has succeeded in casting this news in as positive a light as possible but it is still disappointing.
Earlier in the year venerable publications like Mandate, Inches, Honcho, etc went the way of Playgirl and ceased publication due to declining sales. As we all know online publishing has overtaken print media in virtually every category--newspapers and magazines from both mainstream and adult publishers. For awhile it looked like the Unzipped family was not just immune from the economic downturn and shifting trends but sales had actually increased.
No one doubts that times are changing--this has been the standard explanation for years. It's the speed with which changes occur these days that is mind-boggling. Trends & technology change so fast that by the time you begin to start or follow a trend or buy the latest gadgets they're already being replaced with new ones. Who can say where it's going next.
