Focus on Focus/Refocus
It certainly seems that the studios have gotten very creative with their major productions in recent times with intricate premises, surprisingly artistic cinematography, exotic locations, and hot casting choices. Of course there are those viewers who say they don't care about any of that and just want to watch guys having sex on camera. That said we're sure even these individuals would admit that they've taken notice and it has affected their viewing choices.
Last time we told you a little bit more about the Gobo/Cruz production Dark Room and this time we want to turn our attention to the big Raging Stallion two-parter Focus/Refocus. Thanks to Steve Cruz (who appears on-camera for this one, FINALLY) and other sources we've gotten a much better idea about this movie is and we're already excited.
When we read that Steve Cruz refer to Focus/Refocus as "porn noir" it made us think of last year's
black & white crime drama Alley Cats from Randy Blue (see Alley Cats) This one was set in the 1950's and featured a murder mystery, hardboiled detectives, & prison melodrama. As far as we can tell
Focus/Refocus isn't a period piece but it does have all the elements of the crime drama genre--a hero, a bad guy, a murder mystery, etc. There's also a "femme fatale" character, but before you start to cringe at the thought that this is going to involve bisexual stuff let us reassure it's not. The "femme fatale" in this case is an "'homme fatale" played by Steve Cruz. Apparently they joked around the set that he's actually an "homo fatale". Steve Cruz' character is a porn star/escort by the name of Dario Stefano and he's got a very key role in the drama--so much so that Steve took acting lessons for the flick. In the film Stefano's
"buddies" are murdered one-by-one and the trail of murder leads back to him.
Steve Cruz has already filmed a three-way scene and a solo for the first part of the movie Focus and he has more scenes he'll be filming the second part Refocus. We mentioned before that the key three-way scene features Steve with Ricky Sinz & Adam Killian. By the way Adam Killian is the one we mentioned last time that Steve has already picked for Newcomer of the Year. From the pics we saw and from the premise it looks like at least one person isn't going to survive this three-way.
From the exclusive pics we saw at The Sword and from Steve's blogs we have been able to piece together a few more facts about Focus/Refocus, including the cast. The title suggests a theme of photography and cameras do pop up as props in the stills we saw. Newcomer Cole Streets plays the starring role of Joe Wilder who is trying to solve this murder mystery. The character's name is a tribute to Sunset Boulevard which was directed by Billy Wilder and starring William Holden as Joe. There may be a clue here too since the Joe in the film classic is already dead in the opening sequence of the film which is told in flashback. We also see that the film features David Taylor (as a burglar?), Tristan Jaxx, Conner Habib, and Ryan Raz (who plays one of the many murder victims).
Of course, since Focus/Refocus is a two-part double-disc flick, there even are more cast members whose roles haven't been clarified yet. They include Bruno Bond, Scott Tanner, Jason Crew, Damien Crosse, Francesco D'Macho, Wilfried Knight, Austin Wilde & Alejandro Fernandez. Also, as we mentioned previously the movie has three directors---Chris Ward, Tony Dimarco & Ben Leon.
This brings us to the last nugget of info about Focus/Refocus: it's also being released separately as an R-rated feature. What this means exactly we don't know but it will be interesting to see how this is marketed. Last year we attended the official premiere at a local theater and saw the "story-only" version of To The Last Man which still had brief snippets of the sex scenes left in for continuity. However, it was no more explicit than many mainstream straight films. So, if this is what they're planning with Focus/Refocus it should be mighty interesting.
