Big Brother Returns...

Once again it's time for that annual guilty pleasure CBS' Big Brother. Yes, we know there's plenty of other stuff to watch now that summer is no longer the vast realm of reruns that it once was. And we do watch True Blood, Hung, Top Chef Masters, Kathy Griffin, The Fashion Show, So You Think You Can Dance, etc. and the upcoming return of Project Runway on Lifetime. You might even think that maybe our reality TV fix would be sated enough not to need Big Brother. It just ain't so.

We've been watching Big Brother since the first season and followed all the action along the way except for that disastrous and hastily conceived (because of the writer's strike)  "winter edition".  We've cheered on our favorites and cursed those that we perceived as "villains". We lusted after the hotties whether they were gay or straight and secretly hoped that there'd be a gay hook-up in the house (there certainly have been a lot of straight ones!). We've often been obsessed with the goings on of a group of people who sometimes stay sane and often don't. People who very often forget that they are on camera and say and do things that they probably regret. Whether or nor we like the outcome we still come back to see how things will play out next time.

Since the first season the producers of Big Brother have tried to mix it up with all kinds of new rules and game elements, various competitions and rewards, and game-changing twists---sometimes so bizarre that you wonder how they manage to set them up. Last year the show went back to basics and offered very little in the way of twists although the houseguests were convinced that their season was FULL of them. That brings us to this year where we've seen the new houseguests and been informed of a few changes and a twist that is soon-to be revealed.

The first thing that we learned about this year's Big Brother is that the house has gone green. Because the state of California is enforcing water conservation, the BB house will too. The guests will have recycling bins, composters, and may even have to do their laundry by hand. Rumor is that half the houseguests may have few amenities.

As is usually the case there are 12 houseguests announced for this year --at least so far. At the CBS site where the contestants are listed, a 13th box is left open with a big question mark. An alternate housegest?
A former contestant? Apparently we won't find out until July 7th but it looks like this mystery 13th houseguest IS the twist. As for the other 12 contestants who HAVE been revealed there are 6 males & 6 females --whom you can meet & read about at BB site (http://www.cbs.com/primetime/big_brother).
Now usually we like to give OUR evaluation of the cast but this year were only showing the pics. It's not as if we don't have our impressions of these 12 houseguests, but we haven't been that successful in evaluating past contestants. SO...we'll wait until the first episode OR until we learn more.

One final note. Also coming in July from Bravo is Miami Social which follows the lives of a small group of friends living in the South Florida hot spot. Among the people in this group is Hardy Hill who was in the cast of Big Brother 2 back in 2001. This handsome & sexy guy was our personal favorite from that season and although he didn't win (he came in 3rd) he still remains one of our all-time BB faves.
