The Grabbys: A Look Ahead Part 1

This week we begin our look at the Grabby Awards nominees which will be held on Memorial Day Weekend in Chicago. We're starting our overview now because this week the Grabby Awards announced that the nominees for the MaleFlixxx People's Choice Award. As the name implies this is a popular vote award. Maleflixx chooses the nominees mostly based on viewer response and viewers determine the winner via online voting. This is the fifth year that MaleFlixxx has held this award and its announcement at the The Grabbys  shows it increasing influence.

So, before we get to the rest of the categories here are the nominees for the MaleFlixxx People's Choice Award:

Couples III (Colt Studios)
Cuma Sutra (Black Scorpion)
Dreams of Rafael (Black Scorpion)
Fear (Titan Men)
The Intern (Lucas Entertainment)
Jockstrap (Hot House)
The Men I Wanted (Lucas Kazan)
Musclemen Moving Company Inc. 2 (Blue Blake)
Navy Blues (Centaur Films)
Rock & Hard Places (Kristen Bjorn)

The Grabby Awards are broken down into several divisions: Special Awards (yet to be announced), Production Awards, Performer Awards, Individual Scene Awards, and Genre Awards. Thus, we'll be breaking up our analysis along the same lines. Even though there are fewer categories and nominees than the recent GayVN Awards, the Grabbys do cover a lot of ground. As for the outcome you might think that the results of the GayVN Awards would make predicting a little easier, but it's not necessarily so. The Grabbys often follow their own course and are often full of surprises across the board in nominations, omissions, and ultimately in the winners.

PRODUCTION AWARDS

 Best Art Direction
As we say, The Grabbys often forge their own trends so don't necessarily look for To The Last Man to wipe out the competition. We think that Blue Movie, Paging Dr Finger, and Funhouse are mighty deserving. Each of these flicks had very memorable and realistic sets.

Best Director. In the case of this category it's likely that To The Last Man will win if it wins for best picture. That said, all the talent directors in this category are very deserving. Just as with the Oscars it doesn't make sense for a director to get a nomination if his picture doesn't--and vice-versa. But we would definitely add Steve Cruz to this list for Blue Movie. And one more thing-- Jett Blakk is LONG overdue for an award, people.

 Best Screenplay.

What we like about this category is that it reminds us of how creative and inventive many of the directors and writers are. Because of this, we'd like to take the time to acknowledge all of them.

Jett Blakk for Endgame (Dirty Bird Pictures). We feel especially close to this screenplay and the resulting movie because we got a chance to chat with Jett and see a preview of the film. Even so, our high opinion of this story has not diminished with time. It stays with you. Haunting and personal.

John Bruno for Fleet Week (Falcon). Military fantasies have been the stuff of gay porn since the beginning but Bruno still manages to forge something that is surprisingly fresh.

Tony DiMarco for To The Last Man (Raging Stallion). Sure, this will probably win, but we hope it does so on its merits, not as part of some momentum. Behind the sensationalism of the movie is a romantic subtext and some very naturalistic and at times witty dialog. Tony DiMarco put it all together perfectly.

Joe Gage for Home Invasion (Titan Men). Joe Gage has a talent for making complex storylines easy to follow and never loses sight of the fact that he's making a sex film. After many years in the biz he seemingly never runs out of ideas.

Mike Donner for Porn Ultimatum (Dirty Bird Pictures). Mike Donner worked wonders with this one. It's one thing to come up with a title that's based on popular mainstream movie. It's another to do a pitch perfect sex parody which is what Donner does.

Doug Jefferies for Black Meat White Heat (All Worlds). Believe it or not this one is subtly profound as well as downright sexy. There's a bit of unintended poignancy here too thanks to the untimely death of star Cole Ryder well after this film was shot.

Logan McCree for The Drifter (Raging Stallion). Logan McCree borders perilously close to self-indulgence here but pulls back just enough to create a story about self-acceptance, friendship and love.

Eddie Stone for Unknown (Rascal). Even if this weren't nominated we'd recommend it for its clever script. Supernatural elements and porn can be a clumsy marriage at best bit it works here thanks to former performer Stone's balancing act.

 Best Videography.
In past years we didn't fully appreciate the work and craft of a videographer in adult media. But now we understand that this job is one of the hardest and the most easily overlooked. The videographer has to an unobtrusive as possible to a scene and he has to be the director's eye yet still try to let his work stand out. Because we know the work of Adam Killian, we can look at the work he's done in his two nominations with Brad Austin and recognize his beautiful style. Jett Blakk is doing it all so he doesn't have to worry about whether he's satisfying the director. The other nominees are all memorable too but Leif Gobo is our favorite here for  Blue Movie. By working so closely with Steve Cruz they work as one and created a something visually interesting and highly sexy.

 Best Box Cover.

We've looked all the covers on this list many, many times and so we've probably gotten too used to them to think of one that truly stands out. However, the sexy gritty cover of To The Last Man is perhaps the most memorable.

 Best Still Photographer.

This was tougher than we thought. Our first thought was that hands down visionary photographer Joe Oppedisano should win. But damn if Kent Taylor doesn't just wow us with his work every time. Each has a great case for winning. We'd make it a tie.

 Best Web Based Porn Site.

At last online video sites are recognized at the Grabbys! However, that cautionary phrase "be careful what you wish for.." comes to mind. In future years perhaps the awards will nominate individual videos or performers on a site, or genres, or some other way to give so many of these deserving sites a shot at winning an award. We've written about all of these nominees in so many ways that we feel like they're old friends---and we all know how hard it is to choose between friends. Do you choose the friend you've known the longest and that never lets you down? Do you pick one of your newer friends that makes your life more exciting and unpredictable? Do you pick your clever friend that you envy for their innovation and talent? Do you pick a younger friend who introduces you to his young friends and accepts you even if you aren't in their age group?  Not so easy, is it.  That's why we appreciate ALL these sites for what they've given us and their members:

Cocky Boys   College Dudes 24/7  Corbin Fisher    Frat Men    Randy Blue   Sean Cody
