GLAAD Media Awards 2009: The Winners Part 1
Tyra Banks was presented with the Excellence in Media Award by recently out singer Clay Aiken. This award is given to "individuals who, through their work, have increased the visibility and understanding of the LGBT community in the media". In her acceptance speech Banks talked of being empowered and embraced by the LGBT community pledging to continue to speak out.
Suze Orman, personal finance expert and host of CNBC's The Suze Orman Show was presented with the Vito Russo Award which is given to "an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights for the LGBT community." Actor T.R. Knight presented the award and Orman gave a powerful speech advising the community to invest their time and money in corporations and entities that invest in the community.
A Special Recognition Award was presented by actress Cherry Jones to longtime media icon Phil Donahue. In his speech he talked of the many changes that have occurred since he first received an award in 1990 and how much work still is ahead.
The other Special Recognition Award was presented by Stockard Channing to the Sirius XM Radio documentary The Laramie Project, 10 Years Later - The Lasting Legacy of Matthew Shepard. Katie Castellano who produced the documentary, accepted along with Romaine Patterson & Derek Hartley, hosts of The Derek and Romaine Show.
