GayVN Awards: The Final Analysis

Now that we've had a day or so to absorb all the results of the GayVN Awards held last Saturday in SF we're going to be taking one last look at the outcome and some of aftermath. As we mentioned before, there was a bit of controversy at the awards and at the after-party and the facts of the matter are still being sorted out. As of this writing there's quite a bit being said on certain blogs but we'll just let it all sort itself out. We've got more on it below.

First, congratulations to all the winners and special awards recipients. So many were very gracious and sincere in their gratitude not just to the voters but often to their fellow nominees and co-stars.

The big story of the night were the wins by
To The Last Man and the 18 total awards taken home by its studio Raging StallionRaging Stallion was justifiably proud of its wins and in its post-awards press release pointed out that To The Last Man won more awards that any other film in the studio's history. In addition, Ricky Sinz was again the top award winner (as he was last year) and this year he set a record for the most wins in the history of the GayVN. Raging Stallion was just as proud of its other winners such as Performer of the Year Logan McCree. Again the studio pointed out that stars have won this award for five of the past six years.
  The
Raging Stallion press release also had a bit of news in it. As you might have heard, the studio has merged with AEBN (the porn pay-per-view and VOD network) and as part of this merger/expansion Raging Stallion has signed five new exclusives and hired a major director. The studio will be making announcements on who these new Raging Stallion people will be but they did say that the director has "won dozens of GayVN awards over the past ten years".

  It wasn't a surprise that
To The Last Man won simply because it was the biggest and boldest entry and all those involved in the production worked very hard to make it happen. It also wasn't a surprise that Ricky Sinz took so many prizes since the guy is a natural. That said, we were very happy to see Logan McCree get the coveted Performer of the Year award which we think was due in no small part to The Drifter. His scene with real-life beau Vinnie D'Angelo was also very memorable and deserved its win too. Then there's Scott Tanner who we thought deserved to win as Best Supporting Actor for To The Last Man and he did!

We should probably go over our picks and predictions and see how we scored. However, in a year with a film like
To The Last Man anyone could done well with their predictions. That isn't to say that there weren't some surprises, some of which were very pleasant to see. In that Best Supporting Actor category Scott Tanner tied with another deserving winner---Trevor Knight from Endgame. We were so happy to this fine film get recognized even if it was for one award. Knight had temporarily quit the biz at one point so this had to have come as a very nice validation for his getting back in. On the other hand it was ironic that the Best Newcomer award went to Jackson Wild who has apparently left the industry, at least for now.

The other big story was Brent Corrigan.  He received the award as Best Bottom and his movies took home prizes too-- Just the Sex 1 & 2 as Best Twink Film and Brent Corrigan's Summit as Best Pro/Am Film. Corrigan has admitted he made some bad choices early on that put his career and the industry at risk and for awhile he was pretty much persona non grata. These awards were a bit like the industry offering forgiveness to him and welcoming back into the fold. But the story doesn't end there. As we mentioned in a previous recap Michael Lucas got up on stage and chastised the GayVN for nominating and giving awards to Brent Corrigan.  As he continues to state on his blog Lucas is not interested in forgiveness for Corrigan and naturally, that's his prerogative. At the after-party there was apparently a scuffle between Lucas and Corrigan's boyfriend and the details are in question, but there was police involvement. There haven't been any arrests but the back and forth between the blogs of Lucas & Corrigan will probably go on for several days.

The other major studios also had their share of wins, many of which we felt were much deserved. We're glad to see that the voters had the same thoughts. Titan Media saw
Breakers win two awards for Best All-Sex Film and Best HD Feature. Tommy Ruckus & Jackson Wild took home prizes for Best Solo Performance for Home Invasion and Best Fetish Film went to Folsom Prison. Like Titan Media, Falcon, COLT, and Hot House were up against the To The Last Man but they all got a small share of kudos:

--
Falcon saw Roman's Holiday win for Best Ethnic-Themed Film - Latin while the studio's Best of the 1970s won for Best Classic DVD.

--Hot House took home the awards we picked--Best Leather Film: Verboten 1 & 2 and Best Sex Comedy: Paging Dr. Finger.

--
COLT has always known how to produce a memorable solo film so its win here for Minute Man Solo 31: Hangin' Out  in the Best Solo Film category was as it should be.

Finally as we mentioned on our recap the GayVN introduced website categories for the first time which was a welcome acknowledgment. Online video websites have become a major force and this is where the studios are finding most of their new talent. However, this portion of the awards was truncated--just the winners were announced and they weren't called up on stage to be recognized or give speeches. It could have been time constraints but a more suspicious mind may think this was a diss. Nevertheless the GayVN does love Chaos Men-- Edge, Volume 2  won in the video category for Best Amateur Film and the site won in the Best Amateur Site category. Best Site of the Year went to
C1R.com which was a nod to Chi Chi LaRue
We were very happy that Leo Giamani won for
Best Web Performer not just because he deserved it, but because it gave us the impression that the voters have been paying more attention to websites than the awards show would have us believe. We offer our heartiest congratulations to Leo Giamani.

Finally, for many of us who follow online video sites these website categories are very important and you can well imagine how much they mean to the website owners and performers who put much time and effort into their work. The studios are paying close attention to this market so we would think that those who put together all these awards shows would follow suit. We would like to see the number of categories expand
and/or see the number of nominations per category expand too. We figure it's an inevitability but we would like to see one awards show really go for it.
