To The Last Man Sweeps GayVN Awards

To The Last Man virtually swept the awards at the 2009 GayVN Awards which took place in San Francisco on Saturday March 28. The Raging Stallion blockbuster won 12 awards knocking off the competition one by one in a way that was not so dissimilar from the way actors were killed off in the movie's climax. We've got a near-complete list of winners from the star-studded event which turned out to have plenty of highlights including cheers, tears, a few jeers and lots of queers.

The GayVN Awards returned to the Castro Theatre after a year's hiatus and this year it was broadcast in a streaming live video courtesy of The Sword.  We almost caught the show from beginning to end and we were able fill in most of the gaps thanks to some live twittering. There were some visual and audio difficulties as you might expect from seeing the awards show this way, but since it was the first year and fans got to see it all for free, it's really hard to complain.

While the results of the GayVN Awards were pretty consistent the show itself was a mixed bag. It was an ambitious effort, perhaps overly so. With three celebrity hosts, a live video feed from Australia, impatient audience members, a live drag musical number, and a petulant presenter the organizers had a lot on their plate.

Local SF radio personality Greg Sherrel presided over the festivities and was aided by the celebrity hosts mentioned above. Alec Mapa started things off with his usual hilarity and we loved his take on the whole affair. Later kooky Janice Dickinson appeared and pretty much winged it. Margaret Cho was her usual hilarious and irreverent self and it was great to see she knew what she was talking about. She even performed a folk song tribute to Ricky Sinz--or more accurately his dick. Of course many current performers were there as presenters and eye candy, some of whom were happy to be there and be nominated and win. Here's what we saw as the evening's highlights (and lowlights):

--The Visconti Triplets were there but didn't speak a word providing ample fodder for quips and jokes.

--Kyle King was a co-presenter with Janice Dickinson on hand and you could tell she was gaga over him, even in her semi-crazy way.

--Tober Brandt won for Best Fetish Performer and was very excited to win, but even more excited to be able to embrace Janice!

-- Ricky Sinz won for Best Top and hinted that he may be doing even more work as a bottom and that Raging Stallion has a big one lined up to top him. He and presenter, Steve Cruz seem to be enjoying themselves thoroughly. We wish Steve had won something because every time his name or his movies were mentioned the crowd reacted.

--Michael Lucas had strange comments every time he was up on stage (English not being his first language)and didn't exactly come off as a gracious non-winner. After a presentation featuring reps from the anti-child pornography watchdog group ASACP, Lucas chastised the GayVN for having Brent Corrigan as a presenter and giving him awards. (Corrigan entered porn as a minor with fake ID).

-- There was a mid-show production number featuring a trio of drag queens dancing & lip-syncing to some dance hits. We can't really comment on its merits since we weren't there. But it seemed like a strange interlude.

--The first Trailblazer Award was given to Chi Chi LaRue who wasn't there to accept but thanked the audience in a live video transmission broadcast from Australia.

--The web awards categories were presented by reps from Male Flixxx & CCBill with Dallas Reeves & Nash Lawler as the star power. This is the first year that the GayVN Awards presented the web-based nominations although the presentation itself seemed to get the short shrift due to time considerations. None of the winners were brought up on stage which was a shame. It also seemed as though the audience was not really up to date with online video sites or stars because very few of the nominees received any applause of recognition. Too bad because they would have gone wild seeing Leo Giamani accept for best web performer. Bravo for Leo!

--Marcus Steele was on stage for the artistic categories but was there as eye candy. Again the audience didn't seem to know him--but they will!

--Gino Colbert presented the Hall of Fame Awards that had some genuinely emotional moments. More eye candy Robert Van Damme was there with Colbert as he handed out the awards. Dink Flamingo was thankful and appreciative of his stars --include Cole whom he brought up on stage. Michael Lucas was gracious and generous with his constant "thank you"  although the more verbose he got the less sense he made (again we had to remember English is not his forte). Dean Phoenix was so sweet and his voice broke on several occasions while thanking the crowd and mentioning what the award and the industry has mean to him.

--As we mentioned Margaret Cho was awesome and she knew her stuff from giving head to fetish material to the aforementioned Ricky Sinz

--Bruce Villanch was funny too helping to present the big awards. He may not have been as knowledgeable as Cho but he had some great lines. It was pretty awesome to see Scott Tanner & Trevor Knight tie for Best Supporting Actor. This was the kind of outcome we hoped for.

All in all the evening was entertaining although a little more organization might have helped. But then it wouldn't really be the same GayVN Awards would it? Here then is the list of winners and special awards recipients:
