GayVN Awards: A Closer Look Part 3
It's time again for another look at the nominations for the upcoming GayVN Awards coming on March 28. Here's where it gets a bit more complex thanks to a vast number of categories and nominees. Yes, we know this is adult entertainment so we can't take all of this TOO seriously. That said, there are a great many people who work in this industry and whose efforts are represented with these nominations. For them , this is serious stuff.
Now, on to the more of the nominations.
Best Screenplay.
It's hard to imagine there being this many nominees in this category years ago. Nowadays a screenplay and.or script of any kind is essential for a good movie. We applaud all the nominees here for doing one of the hardest tasks in this biz --writing a script with a story that doesn't overshadow sexual content, creating sex scenes that are as original as possible and believable while still keeping in mind that this is fantasy fulfillment.
Our personal favorites here are Jett Blakk's script for Endgame and Logan McCree's The Drifter. Both take their protagonists on a journey of self-discovery and create fascinating characters along the way. But the stories couldn't be more different. As pure fiction with a dash of the supernatural, Endgame is moody and mysterious. The Drifter is more personal, a semi-autobiographical piece that a good chunk of viewers could relate to.
Coming in close for us was the ambitious To The Last Man. With such a huge cast writer Tony Dimarco still managed to create some distinctive and believable characters in an epic environment. Alm ost as ambitious was The Porne Ultimatum which was an almost pitch-perfect adult take-off on the Bourne movies. Satirical, witty, and completely entertaining.
We have a feeling that To The Last Man will win, although we'd love to see Jett Blakk or Mike Donner get recognition.
Best Non-Sex Performance
Matthew Johnson as the preacher in To The Last Man was satisfactory although not thoroughly convincing. Ricky Sinz as the devil in Hotter Than Hell Part 1 was delightfully sinister and sexually appealing at the same time and really stood out in our minds. There are very few guys like Sinz who can act so well.
Best Cum-Shot
How do you grade something like this? Volume? Distance? Or both with a combination of verbosity and loudness. All the guys listed in this category were no doubt nominated for having at least one of these qualities. Frankly we couldn't decide although we specifically enjoy watching Rafael Alencar, Barrett Long, Jason Ridge, and Kurt Wild. Who will win? It's anyone's game.
Best Solo Performance
It takes a different kind of talent to do this kind of performance. First one has to be great to look at from every angle and hold the attention of the viewer. The performer has to look like he's fantasizing about someone while he's getting off and he has to pleasure his whole body. Vic Rocco, Kyle King, and Tory Mason were the most memorable to us but we have a thing for Kyle King. We could
watch him read the phone book and be satisfied. Our pick aside, it's hard to say who will win.
Best Oral Scene
Definitely another subjective category. Some people like deep-throating scenes, some like chokers, others like lollipop lickers. For an award like this both performers have to look like they're enjoying it thoroughly. It's easy enough to edit in close-ups of a guy seeming to be getting the blowjob of their lives even though he might not be. For the guy doing the sucking it's hard to fake it.
There are some real memorable scenes to choose from in this category and they do represent a variety of styles. Cum Sutra had so many hot scenes including the scene nominated here. Sex Hiker had Zack Randall & Zackary Pierce. Jackson Wild & Ricky Sinz did an amazing job in To The Last Man. It was hot and dirty like the rest of the film. The scene from Best Men Pt 1 with Matthew Rush & Zeb Atlas may have had some off camera drama, but the onscreen chemistry was palpable. Any of these winning would satisfy us but we have a feeling To The Last Man will carry this one too.
Best Sex Scene - Duo
Sex scenes can be derivative, redundant, and sometimes go on too long--especially if you've already gotten off while the performers are still going at it. If you can make it through an entire scene without using the fast forward or skip option, then it usually holds true that the scene is a good one. The ones that stand out for us in this category had something different going on that riveted our attention or the scene just had perfect chemistry. Our faves are:
Contact - Tristan Jaxx and Alexy Tyler -Mustang. Two wrestlers winding up their match with hot sex. Total fantasy of course. Plus there's sexy Alexy. That says it all.
Double Standard - François Sagat and Max Schutler - Titan Media. Two very hot guys who take it up a notch with the use of some props and their natural chemistry
The Drifter - Logan McCree and Vinnie D'Angelo - Raging Stallion. Old-fashioned, hot, and sensual,with a long seduction that's worth every second. Repeat viewings are mandatory.
Funhouse - Dean Flynn and Eric Moreau - Titan Media. Again--very hot and sensual thanks to the limber body of Moreau and the always sexy Flynn. It's exactly what you'd love to see transpire in a Cirque Du Solieil show.
Serbia - Roman Ragazzi and Brennon - Collin O'Neal's World of Men. Another one bears the test of repeat viewings Two perfectly matched muscle studs on top of a table and they really look like they're into each other.
Telescope - Steven Ponce and Diesel Washington - Titan Media. Washington is a big hard-pounding brute and Ponce loves it. Plus Washington can do some amazing things on camera with his body and some eye-popping sexual positions.
Our pick here is The Drifter scene because it proves that when you get the right guys together they can transform a scene that looks fairly mild on paper. It could and should win.
Best Threesome
We readily admit that threesomes and group scenes don't do it for us but even we recognize a good one when we see it. The standouts for us here were:
Cuma Sutra - Brodie Sinclair, Rocko, Anthony Marks - Black Scorpion. This was a revelation because Brodie often comes across as being very detached. Not here with his co-stars.
Hotter Than Hell Part 2 - Dak Ramsey, Logan McCree, Tober Brandt - Raging Stallion. A fetish-lover's delight. You may feel a little;e dirty watching these guys but it becomes a guilty pleasure.
To the Last Man - Ricky Sinz, Scott Tanner, Logan McCree - Raging Stallion. This is memorable for sure. It's actually an essential scene for the movie both for plot and character. It's not necessarily hot & sexy because it involves rape but it's done so well that it's one of our picks---and will probably win.
Best Group Scene
Again not our favorite type of scene but the following were worth viewing. In our eyes, they mixed it up a bit which helped up appreciate this type of scene.
Best Men Part 2: The Wedding Party – Falcon - Erik Rhodes, Aden Jaric, Jordan Jaric, Austin Wylde, Turk Mason. This has the Jarics in it and doing it with other guys for the first time. "Nuff said.
Blackballed 6: Under the Hood - All Worlds - Scott Alexander, Christopher Ashlee, Eddie Diaz, Arin Driver, Markus Ram, Aron Ridge, Ian Rock, Dylan Saunders. One of the best scenes in this series.
Endgame - Dirty Bird Pictures - Chad Hunt, Cort Donovan, Nash Lawler, Phenix Saint. This one is more than the milestone of Chad Hunt's first bottom role. It's got a brutal gangbang (again essential to the plot) that's very effective contrasted against the sensual grotto setting.
Paging Dr. Finger - Hot House - Kai Ford, Dillon Crowe, Jackson Wild, Trevor Knight. What a cast for this one--and boy do they do it well.
Slide - Jet Set Men - William West, Shane Erickson, Dean Carter, Patrick Bateman. This one has a lot of partner changing and position shifting that keeps it moving.
For this Endgame should win it and we hope does.
