Red Light
After seeing Red Light, the second of Steve Cruz & Leif Gobo's directorial efforts for Falcon/Mustang it's apparent that the distinctive style and surreal sexiness found in their first flick Blue Movie was not a fluke. In fact, we think that Red Light is a more fully realized expression of the directors' talent. To be sure, Blue Movie was more ambitious since it was aiming to recreate a 70's & 80's porn flick without much dialog or a clear-cut plotline.
Cruz & Gobo ditch the retro theme for Red Light but again opt to create scenarios with minimal plot and dialog woven together by the same theme--hustlers and escorts and use of the color red. The theme itself is not so obvious just by viewing --we have the press information and the clue evident in the title Red Light to tell us, but it's really only clearly laid out periodically. As with Blue Movie, Red Light makes up for this minimalist approach to plot with well-shot, richly colored, and potent sex scenes.
As for the sex scenes in Red Light, each one is memorable because of the combination of style and the impeccable well-chosen cast. They represent the spectrum of today's talent, from exciting newcomers to veterans from movies and online videos. Unlike so many movies Red Light starts out strong and doesn't let up until the end.
Scene one features a leather clad and mustached Tyler Saint who appears to be hired to dominate his business-suited client played by ultra-sexy newcomer Bruno Bond. At first glance you'll assume that Bond is a lookalike surrogate for co-director Cruz--which may have been the original intention. Perhaps Cruz wanted to film his own wish-fulfillment. That said, Bond seems a tad less devilish than Cruz and more submissive as he's stripped of his clothes, bound by rope and taken advantage of by the relentless Saint. Even though Cruz and Bond had already started seeing each other in real life, this scene could easily have served as a good way to audition a potential boyfriend.
Hairy chested and scruffy studs Jake Dakota & Josh West play two guys who cruise each other in the alley and rather than make the effort to go inside, they do their thing in the alley. It's a hot little scene complete with rough and tumble sex on top of trash cans and against the chain link fence. You may not get what's going on in the scene in terms of a set-up, but Cruz leaves that for the end which has a somewhat humorous twist.
The third scene is a dream team-up with two of today's "it" guys Vince Ferelli and Leo Giamani. Sitting in his red convertible Leo cruises Vince before signaling him over for some car sex. The two waste no time getting down to it and they make good use of the car as a sex prop. Even though you may be a little distracted to notice it both Ferelli & Giamani have individual signature styles of performing that complement each other well. The ending may or may not have a little twist, depending on your perception of a look Ferelli gives Giamani after they're through. Leo pays Vince but it looks like Vince wasn't expecting it, leading one to believe that Vince had been mistaken for a street hustler.
The last scene has the most dialog with Diesel Washington in top form as a tall. muscular & very dominant client and Tristan Matthews as his slighter call boy. Wielding a wad of cash Washington puts Matthews through his paces, in all kinds of sexual positions with a "pay as you go" cash installment plan. Yes, you'll get to see Washington exhibit one of his signature moves that's become a "rite of passage" for several of his co-stars. Diesel Washington won a Hookie Award last year in the fetish category and you can certainly see why from this scene.
So, we're down to one more in the Cruz/Gobo "color box" trilogy for Mustang. It will have to really be a big effort to top Red Light.
