Broadway Backwards 4

Good news, New Yorkers and Broadway fans: Broadway Backwards is coming back for a fourth annual installment. It happens this year on Monday, February 9, 2009 as it returns to the American Airlines Theatre. What IS Broadway Backwards? It's an annual benefit concert for the LGBT Center Of NY and features an all-star line-up of Broadway performers singing tunes familiar to afficionados of musiical theater.
The difference with THIS benefit is that the well-known songs are performed with twist---songs normally written for and sung by one gender are performed by the other. For example, the song "Im Gonna Wash that Man Right Out Of My Hair" from South Pacific is meant to be sung by women in the musical (obviously). In Broadway Backwards the tune is sung by a male chorus. Or like last year "suddenly Seymour" from Little Shop Of Horrors was sung by the delicious & talented Cheyenne Jackson & Anthony Rapp. It's been a very successful and unique night of entertainment and we're giving you a heads up earlier this year (thanks to a Facebook notice!)
This year the line-up includes:
--Mario Cantone (Assassins, TV’s “Sex and the City”)
--Alan Cumming (Cabaret)
--Gina Gershon (Cabaret, Showgirls)
--Whoopi Goldberg (Producer: Thoroughly Modern Millie, “The View”)
--Aaron Lazar (Les Misérables)
--Megan Mullally (Young Frankenstein, How to Succeed in Business…, “Will & Grace”)
--Jai Rodriguez (TV’s “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy,” Rent)
--Christopher Sieber (Spamalot)
--John Tartaglia (Avenue Q)
Also on hand will be Ugly Betty Michael Urie and Becki Newton, the returning creator of the event Robert Bartley and co-chairs John Kander and Terrence McNally. If you live in NY or plan to be there check out http://www.gaycenter.org/broadwaybackwards for tickets & info.
