Proposition 8--The Battle
A couple days ago we posted a list that has been circulating on the web and which names businesses which allegedly have some connection to the Proposition 8 campaign. We hesitated about publishing the lengthy list since it really lacked explanation as to how the businesses were connected to the Mormon Church (a big backer of the proposition). After discussions with several people and some very thoughtful comments here at the blog, we've taken it down.
As a few friends and some of comments reminded us, some of the company connections were dubious at best. If a company was owned by an individual who was Mormon that didn't necessarily mean they supported the measure. Take Steve Young, the pro-athlete. He's a descendant of Brigham Young and he came out publicly against the measure.
So we've removed the list. You'll probably be able to find it elsewhere, but we urge you to read the comments here before you look at the list and make up your mind about boycotting based on your OWN research. It would be counter-productive to make people pay who might very well be our supporters.
And for all you Californians, check your local businesses to see what their stance was. When you boycott the contributors and/or supporters, let them know you're doing it--otherwise it has little impact.
Finally, for those here and all over the country there is something you can do-- Join the Impact - Protest Prop 8 on November 15th! There's a nationwide protest that begins simultaneously at 10:30am PST and 1:30pm EST
on the steps of your local city hall. For details and locations check the website at http://jointheimpact.com/.
