Baresi As Art

Titan Media announced the other day that one of their superstars Alex Baresi has been immortalized in the world of fine art. Baresi is the subject of a new painting by Australian artist Ross Watson. World famous artist Watson, whose work is a deft combination of pop art and classical painting, has been seen in galleries and collected by luminaries such as Elton John. He chose Alex Baresi to be portrayed in a tribute to artist Caravaggio whose painting of a naked and smiling St John shocked the church when it appeared in 1600.

As with other works, Ross Watson loves to place modern icons and contemporary figures within the context of reproductions of classical paintings. His subjects have included Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears, openly gay athlete Ian Roberts and he did a series of works for the Gay Games in Sydney Australia. As you can see here and at his site (www.rosswatson.com) Watson has a photo-realistic style and an uncanny ability to fuse two worlds together.

The semi-controversial choice to feature one of male erotica's international favorites Alex Baresi in a work that was very controversial at the time (and remains so today) has to be a stroke of inspired genius (so to speak). Who knows, this might inspire other contemporary artists to feature other adult stars in their art.
We could easily see any number of sexy stars in a statue of David pose.
