Gay TV--The Summer Edition

What would summer (or Gay Pride Month for that matter) be without some TV with gay appeal and a good dose of representation (good, bad and in between)?

First, we hope you've caught We're All Angels on Showtime this month. If not you should catch this beautiful documentary on Showtime On Demand. It really is a must-see movie with a truly unique subject matter--the trials and travels of a gay couple, very much in love who are also Christian pop music stars. If this sounds bizarre, then you're in for a happy surprise. It's witty, uplifting, insightful, and it makes you think or re-think your perceptions of religion and spirituality.

Bravo has our favorites and then some:

--This Friday June 27 at 7 PM The GLAAD Media Awards airs and this unique program deserves our support. All four ceremonies (held in LA, NY, SF , & Miami) will be represented and while we know the winners, it should be a fun and exciting show.

--Kathy Griffin's My Life On The D-List is absolutely priceless--we can never get enough of her.  You would think that she can't possibly come up with new premises, but Kathy always seems to do it. This season she's gunning for a Grammy and has a few schemes to do it. There's also her new relationship with "Woz" (Steve Wozniak) and with her mom both of which will provide lots of great material. So far this season Kathy spent New Year's Eve with Anderson Cooper (who demonstrated he's a good sport and he is a wit), went to the Producers Guild Awards and went to visit the hometowns of assistants Tom & Tiffany. This was the best--it was a real-life I Love Lucy episode (see "Ethel's Home Town").  This week she goes to Gay Mardis Gras in Sydney and no doubt she'll find as much humor in it as possible.

--Flipping Out has started and inexplicably we're already hooked with this reality show. It's really hard to describe the appeal of viewing a gay real-estate flipper with OCD. Jeff Lewis is probably not the kind of egocentric you want as representative of the gay community but you just have to shake your head in wonder that such a person exists. This self-diagnosed narcissist may treat friends and employees and business associates with equal disdain but he does have talent. We especially like his Elaine Benes lookalike Jenny and her hubby Chris. This season he's working with someone who is almost a female version of himself and there's a certain amount of glee we get at seeing him get his relative comeuppance.

--Shear Genius starts this week and will probably have a some flamboyant and creative gay men in the mix of contestants. Drama? According to one contestant "it's going to be a beauty bloodbath". There's been lots of buzz about this season when the original Charlie's Angels reunite--That's right Farrah & Kate will join Jaclyn Smith on a special episode.

--Project Runway airs in July (it's final season on Bravo) so we'll see how this one goes.

Elsewhere we've got The Mole going on and it's turned into a major disappointment. It's not as exciting as that first season and the one contestant we have pegged as gay is a mess. Poor Bobby. He's either the most un-athletic gay in existence or he's doing a great job of acting if he's the Mole.

Then there's Big Brother. Hopefully CBS has done a better job with casting after that quickie, strike-induced disaster of Big Brother: Till Death Do Us Part. We appreciated the fact that there were TWO gay men cast last season but it all went horribly wrong. This season there will be 13 houseguests and another weird "how are they going to do THIS?" twist--a live audience for the live evictions. The contestants should be announced soon.
