Bravo Gaylist Awards
The other night Bravo aired its first Bravo A-List Awards which could easily have been called the "Gaylist Awards" considering the heavy gay ambiance to the whole peculiar affair. Of course from our gay perspective we aren't complaining and it certainly isn't surprising since Bravo's programming couldn't be gayer. Well.... actually it could but that's where Logo and here! are supposed to pick up the slack.
It was a strange evening of television nonetheless. The "red carpet" took place just before Kathy Griffin's My Life on the D-List premiered, then the 90 minute awards show aired. Strange? Peculiar? Why those words you might ask? Well for one thing the show had to be edited to fit into the time slot and we imagine some off-color material had to be trimmed too. But the show also seemed to lack spontaneity even when it was bizarre. It was as though all;l the awards were announced previously. Nevertheless we do have some observations.
--Kathy Griffin again proved why we love her. She hosted the awards well and deflated enough windbags and mocked those who needed it. And she has a surprisingly great voice! Her opening number wound up great. We love you Kathy.
--Kathy didn't have to say a word about Lauren Hutton, whose appearance couldn't have been saved by any editor. Her award, some kind of lifetime achievement thing, was presented by here pal Padma (hostess of Top Chef) and although Ms Hutton warned everyone she had been up for 46 hours because of some relationship problems, she still babbled incoherently. Tip for future awards shows producers-- make sure you monitor the special awards recipients for a week before the show!
--See ya later decorator. Jonathan Adler (Top Design) had an interesting idea for the award design but it wound up looking like one of those abstract heads you find at cheap wig shops. Every drag in creation could see that!
--Christian Siriano seemed like he's gotten tired of his "fierce" persona from Project Runway. It seemed very forced. But he did have fun winning his expected "drama king" award.
--Before the show, we thought that Tom Colicchio might be the victim of bad editing as judge on Top Chef. Nope, even outside of the series he still comes off unlikable. Maybe its that Telly Savalas/Curly from the Three Stooges look combined with his gross eating habits. Whatever it is, we're glad he's straight.
--Tila Tequila is pretty hard-edged for someone so delicately pretty. We watch her MTV bi-sexual reality dating show A Shot at Love for the sexy guys but it seems pretty obvious to us that she'd be happier if it was a lesbian dating show instead. We have a feeling that Workout's Jackie Warner was probably there panting after Tila. Now there's a crossover! When we watched the Tila show we wondered if MTV would ever do a show like that with a bisexual dude--now THAT would be hot.
--That fashion show at the end was very telling. Nick Verreos did a perfect gown for Kathy and Sweet P did her job for the tattoo artist but what was up with Laura Bennett? Nikki Taylor should have been furious at having to wear that hideous creation. As for Make Me A Super Model winner Holly Kizer, we're embarrassed to say we got a kick out of seeing the whiny dip wear Chris March's hideous hair dress. It's her "reward" for beating out our choice Ronnie Kroell for the top prize.
--Dana Delany? Good. Rainn Wilson? Creepy. Unfunny.
Finally, there were some awards that didn't even make it on air. We'll find those winners and get back to you. Even the Bravo site doesn't have them posted--yet.
