Time Out..For Politics!
This week history was made in America and although the focus of this blog and Jack Manly is entertainment, we can't let this pivotal moment in time go without a brief mention.
Today, Hillary Clinton suspended her campaign in noble fashion by endorsing Barack Obama. This was not an easy speech to make for Clinton who gave her heart and soul to her campaign, to her supporters and to those millions in America who deserve a voice. But she emphasized sincerely and with deep conviction that although she would not be a candidate any longer that the stakes are too high this year for there to be divisions within the Democratic Party. Hillary announced she would work hard for Barack and urged her supporters to do likewise.
It will take a little time for Hillary Clinton's most fervent supporters and voters to transfer their allegiance to someone else, but with her help we hope and pray that this happens soon. Even within Jack Manly we had different opinions on which candidates we supported but we knew that no matter how heated the campaigns got and no matter what the outcome, we would support the candidate who won the Democratic nomination.
And so it is that we have with two very different choices for President. A choice between forging ahead and embracing long overdue change or staying mired in the stagnancy of old politics. For many years the country has been hijacked by those who would use our diversity to create divisions. It seems now that more people want to move beyond these divisions and come together. Whether or not Barack Obama has inspired this or that he came along when the time was right in inconsequential. The point is that he is leading the way now.
We had a very real opportunity after 9/11 to come together but we were saddled with an administration that used this to sneak in an agenda that has nearly ruined us. John McCain would have us believe that this is the status quo and that we should stick with him as the steady hand who will help us accept this.
Obviously we can't tell anyone how they should vote but we do feel the need now to express ourselves on the importance of this election. The perennial election question has been the self-centered "Are you better off now than you were 4 years ago?" when we should ask "Is the country or the world better off now than 4 years ago?"
We urge all of you to take this into consideration and remind yourself of the consequences for EVERYONE if we make the wrong choice this November.
