Queer TV Round-Up

Gay couple returns on "Housewives"                                         Gay Spy Thriller!

There was a time not so long ago that we'd have to scrounge around to find news about out performers and gay programming. Now it seems there isn't enough time in the day to cover it all. Naturally we don't to overlook anything but there so much to report and it might take several blog entries within the next few days to cover it all.

We just picked up a May program guide from here! and it is fully loaded! You'll find the booklet at kiosks in your gay-friendly parts of town or inside your local gay magazines, but for those of you who can't pick one up we thought we'd give you the highlights. We do have ONE complaint though. here! is not included in any of our Time Warner cable line-up "tiers"---we have to subscribe to this gay channel separately and that is horribly unfair. Our cable bill is already outrageous and you'd think the cable company would add here! for those who already have premium packages. That said, here's what here! has in store for us:

--Sexy and talented Robert Gant (Ben from Queer As Folk) is starring in the original film Kiss Me Deadly, a spy thriller co-starring Shannen Doherty. Gant plays Jacob Keane, a gay former secret agent who is thrust back into the game by his ex-partner. The film may also spawn some a series (much like the Donald Strachey detective mysteries starring Chad Allen as the gay PI)

--Edgar Allan Poe gets an update with a gay twist in House of Usher, directed by David DeCoteau (openly gay his career was launched by B-movie legend Roger Corman).

--
Quirky and sexy dramedy Paradise Falls has returned for another season and promises to be even gayer. As an added bonus we get one of our gay icons Julie Brown in the role of a porn director!

--Chris & John To The Rescue features a couple who settle in Provincetown and do good deeds for those gay and lesbian fools in need.

Also, the third season of the sexy supernatural thriller Dante's Cove is out on DVD in June. Notable here is that his season Reichen Lehmkuhl joined the cast. Incidentally, it looks like Reichen is single again. On his MySpace page he lists himself as single again and has put forward a list of Hollywood dating "don'ts". Obviously his last relationship did not end happily. We had the pleasure of meeting Reichen on his book tour and can tell you he is a genuinely nice person---we wish him the best and hope he has better luck next time.

We mentioned Robert Gant earlier and one of his Queer As Folk co-stars is going to appear on the season finale of Desperate Housewives. Gale Harrold (Brian on QAF) will be moving to Wisteria Lane and and it looks like his mysterious character will be featured next season. Incidentally we've heard a rumor that the fifth season of  Desperate Housewives will have a big twist----it may take place five years later. Relationships may be different and there may be several new characters. Besides the kid characters would be recast. We'd hate to see the precocious Scavo boy actors go, but we'd be delighted to see the "bad seed" Kayla go. Part of the rumor mill is that Bree's son Andrew will be living with one member of the gay couple introduced this season. By the way, what happened here? The couple have barely had anything to do this season and we are disappointed that delicious Tuc Watkins hasn't gone shirtless once!

Here's what's up on the other network shows:

--It looks like the upcoming wedding of Kevin & Scotty on Brothers and Sisters is not just going to be big for the show and the network. GLAAD is also planning on hyping it.

--In case you missed it the gay couple Luke & Noah on the daytime drama As the World Turns finally kissed last week after 7 months of no lip-locking.

--Gossip Girl steps it up tonight when character Eric Van Der Woodsen (played by Connor Paolo) comes out.  Not only that but he's seen kissing Asher (played by Jesse Swenson) The problem? Asher is also the new bf of
Jenny, whose brother is dating Eric's sister. Confused? Well this is a soap about gossip!

As for the unofficially gayest non-gay channel (or is it the straightest non-straight channel?) Bravo has been a hodge-podge lately. While we wait impatiently for Kathy Griffin to return (at least she's co-hosting the Bravo TV Awards) we've been biding our time with it's other reality/competition shows:

--Step It Up And Dance. This one has been surprisingly good although we have to admit that we're playing favorites. Cody has to be the gay fave for this initial season even though his sexuality hasn't come up. He's got the look and the body plus an athletic grace that's reminiscent of Gene Kelly.

--Top Chef. No gay boys that we know of here, but lesbians are well-represented. However, we have to say hat the lesbians this time out are a little on the bitter side---and have a too much drama. If we wanted this much we'd watch Work Out!

--Work Out. Great segue, huh? Yes Jackie has returned with oodles of lesbian and gay drama. The poor dear just doesn't seem to have much luck (or judgment) when it comes to romance. Bitchy queen Jesse is back and two hunks have joined the gym. One is a gay masseur (and yes they've cracked jokes about this). The other is fitness model Greg Plitt who we were really looking forward to seeing. He's still great to look at but we recommend turning the sound down on the TV. He's not coming off too well here (perhaps he should have made friends with the editor). We like him better on HGTV's Designed to Sell.

--Shear Genius is on its way back. We were very happy with the results of the first season ---winner Anthony Morrison is not only super-talented but he's also a dear friend. He's been traveling a lot lately but we'll update you on him on a future blog (with his permission of course). Interestingly, first season contestant Tabatha had done a pilot for another show Tabatha's Salon Makeover but it's vanished from the Bravo site.
As for hair, Blow Out featuring straight drama queen Jonathan Antin isn't due back but Brandon Martinez (the tattooed stylist who had a falling out with Jonathan) will be featured in Salon Diaries. Yes, it chronicles his new adventures in the world of high-fashion hair design.  It starts May 16.
