My Life On The GLAAD List
Sometimes it's hard for us to find good news or at least something uplifting to report in order to temporarily take our minds off the lousy economy, the seeming less endless war, and political wrangling. Leave it to GLAAD to provide us with the solution to the problem. On Saturday April 26, the third leg of the GLAAD Media Awards took place in LA and we're here to report the winners and the pleasant surprises.
But, before we get to that we have to do a little catching up.....
Previously, we reported on the first part of the GLAAD Media Awards that took place in NYC on March 17 but we neglected to talk about the second part which took place in South Beach on April 12. It's an oversight we wish to correct now.
Multimedia star Jade Esteban Estrada hosted the awards which took place at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida and included a performance by R&B singer Deborah Cox. Presenters included Jai Rodriguez (Queer Eye), Judge David Young, Frank Cairo (Paparazzi TV) and Teresa Rodriguez (Aqui y Ahora). Honorees included out actor and activist Wilson Cruz (My So Called Life, Party Monster, and others) who received the Visibilidad Award and Reggaeton singer Ivy Queen who received a Special Recognition Award. And Christine Chavez, granddaughter of Cesar Chavez, presented a Special Recognition Award to the social justice magazine “The Intelligence Report.”
Back in LA, the awards featured two repeat winners in the TV category Brothers & Sisters and Ugly Betty, but the happy surprise was that Kathy Griffin: My Life On The D-List got the nod in the Reality Series category. After an Emmy win and this GLAAD Award, Kathy Griffin may have to change the name of her show--she is A-list with us! It must have been tremendous evening for Kathy who also performed (with her mother at her side).
We're hoping we get to see much of this star-studded evening (along with the other cities' awards presentations) when it airs on Bravo. There is no air date yet since the last event won't happen until May 10 in San Francisco. In any case here's the list of winners:
