Out and About
Cheyenne Jackson again ..live with it Luke MacFarlane
It could be a little blip on the screen or maybe, just maybe, the seeds of something else starting to happen. Call it wishful thinking but we were encouraged by two self-outings this past week. Plus there was casting news for someone who has already come out and contradicting that theory that doing so will damage your career.
First the men who came out. It may not be a surprise to many but actor Luke MacFarlane, who plays Scotty on Brothers and Sisters, made the revelation to a Canadian newspaper this week. The interview also included the info that his character will be a regular on the show in anticipation of his getting married to Kevin (played by Matthew Rhys). Naturally he did speak of his worries over being out in Hollywood but we think he's in good company ever since Neil Patrick Harris and TR Knight came out. After all this certainly has not affected the straight roles these two play on their respective series. Hmm, since TR came out and he was once linked with Luke can we expect other outings soon? A "break" from the "prison" of the closet perhaps?

The other coming out was Azariah Southworth (pictured above). He's a Christian TV host in Nashville and he came out this past week saying, "I believe by me living my life honestly and authentically now, I am able to be a better person and a better Christian.” Obviously this was a big deal and we're sure that this instant fame is going to have some impact on his life and career. But it also puts him in a position to prove that being gay and Christian are not mutually exclusive. We'll see how this turns out.
Then there's the news about one of our faves and "out" actors. Cheyenne Jackson, the handsome and talented star of Broadway's Xanadu, has joined the cast of gay-themed independent movie Shifting the Canvas. It's a multi-character story that takes place in a hip NY neighborhood and Cheyenne will be featured as a "straight Ivy League type". The stars include JP Pitoc who nearly stole the show in Trick, former Kids in the Hall member Scott Thompson, and Matthew Montgomery one of the stars of Long-Term Relationship . Naturally we'll be keeping you up to date on this one.

Matthew Montgomery JP Pitoc
Lest we forget we had the good fortune to meet Cheyenne Jackson after a Xanadu performance and he was truly one of the nicest guys and he was sincerely gracious to his fans. Of course he's exceptionally good-looking but he's also a versatile talent. Take a look at his role as Mark Bingham in Flight 93 and you'll see what we mean. It IS a difficult movie to watch but it is very riveting and one of the few 9/11 movies that is neither exploitative or pandering.
Finally, since we mentioned JP Pitoc earlier and we are discussing films you should take a look at Trick again.
It's a sweet romantic comedy and has a a great cast including Christian Campbell, an hilarious cameo by Coco Peru, and Tori Spelling in a wonderfully self-deprecating role. We hear that her new gay-themed movie Kiss the Bride is getting good buzz too. In this one she plays a bride-to-be whose fiance's gay ex shows up for the wedding with farcical results. We shall see.
