Girls Will Be Girls LIVES

One of the tackiest, most tasteless and blatantly and unapologetically politically incorrect movies is airing tonight (and in two more showings) on IFC ---Girls Will Be Girls. We have mentioned this cult flick before and are happy to report that it's getting more recognition these days. There are also two more webisodes airing at the official Girls Will Be Girls website -- "Delivering Coco" pts 1 & 2 featuring guest star Scott Thompson (from Kids in the Hall) This brings the total to four webisodes that add to the Girls Will Be Girls "experience".
For newcomers, Girls Will Be Girls is similar to a John Waters flick with a little Charles Busch flair and satire thrown in for good measure. But Girls Will Be Girls is creatively successful on its own merits. The brainchild of TV writer and producer Richard Day, the film revolves around three characters--Evie, Coco, and Varla Jean thrown together in send-up of tacky Hollywood culture. To say ANY more would ruin the many surprises to be found. If you haven't seen the movie you must make time for it. As we mentioned it airs tonight on IFC at midnight. And for TiVo deprived guys you can catch it again on March 26 at 7PM in a "children's matinee" AND on Monday, March 31 at 9:00 PM and 1:00 AM. After you've seen it, check out the webisodes.
While we're on the subject, you should also visit the websites of the principals. Miss Coco Peru has been one of our faves for awhile now, ever since we first saw his/her bit part in Trick. Coco Peru puts on a great "one-woman" show and we're very lucky to have seen her perform locally in LA at the GLBT Center. Ugly Coco was the most recent show and it is highly recommended. Watch for Coco appearances or by all means contact your local LGBT Center and urge them to book Miss Coco Peru (http://misscocoperu.com)
Jack Plotnick who plays Evie Harris, has been one of the hardest working actors in LA and has appeared in countless films, TV shows, etc and was one of the executive producers of Girls Will Be Girls. Check out his website at http://www.jackplotnick.com to learn more about this wonderfully gifted man.
Varla Jean Merman (http://www.varlaonline.com) is more than just a drag queen. He/She has taken the persona of Varla on an incredible journey of stage performances, one-woman shows, and much more. Like her fellow actors you can see just how impressive her resume is by going to the aforementioned website.
We wouldn't be true to our Jack Manly tradition, if we neglected to point out that Girls Will Be Girls also is noteworthy for some hunkalicious eye candy--Ron Mathews. This fitness model and actor has graced the covers of many mags, his sculpted body provided the mold for the Superman suit, and he had his own workout show on Lifetime every Friday. The good news is that although the show wasn't renewed, there are plans for DVDs. We've had the privilege of meeting Ron Mathews and not only is he dedicated to his craft, he's also a very nice guy.
