Give My Regards To Broadway

Periodically we like to devote a some space to Broadway news, especially when it's pertinent to gay culture. Ok, we know theater is already pretty pertinent to gay cultuure but in the case of the following news items, it's of more interest.

The writer and director of the smash Avenue Q's Ware turning their talents to an adaptation of Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City.  Tony-winning writer Jeff Whitty and director Jason Moore are joining forces again along with Jason Sellards (composer/lyricist) and John Garden (composer) of the rock band Scissor Sisters to create this stage version of the iconic gay fiction. From what we read, it will be a faithful adaptation and of the first novel and include some elements of the second More Tales of the City work.

In other news, "Boys Night" at Xanadu  turned out to be a big success so it resumed on March 12 and it will continue each Wednesday until for the foreseeable future. In case you haven't seen it Xanadu is a campy musical send-up of the box-office movie bomb which originally starred Olivia Newton-John. The main character is a struggling songwriter played by the super-hot Cheyenne Jackson who cavorts about the stage wearing tight ultra-short cut-off jeans. Aside from being very talented, he's stunning to watch (did you know Cheyenne played the gold-bikini wearing Rocky in Rocky Horror Show?)

Because it's turned into a gay fave, the Broadway production of Xanadu has gone all out for these "Boys Night @ Xanadu"  evenings. There are pre-show receptions (with free cocktails) held at Sardi's (with the March 26 being held at The Ritz) And following the performances at the Helen Hayes Theatre, there's also a Q & A talkback.

Hmmm..we started wondering about casting for Tales of the City. Cheyenne Jackson as Michael? Dr John? .
Speaking of the book series, in case you haven't read or seen the adaptations, we're providing the links. These are truly must-read books in our opinion. And even if you aren't the literary type, the adaptations are stellar (although the first was THE best)

NOTE: The First 3 books in the series were culled chapters serialized in the newspaper
The second three were all original novels. The 7th book takes place almost 20 years later
