GayVN Awards: And the Winners Are..pt 2
You didn't think we'd report on the 2008 GayVN Awards without making some mention of the little controversies and backstories now did you? Of course not! It wouldn't be a gay adult video awards show without something to report. This one had it all---before, during, and after. This won't even be the end of all this fun! There's still one more awards show to go---The Grabbys! (see below)
Of course you already the pre-show problems. Kathy Griffin was not the hostess again even though she triumphed last year. No, the GAyVN people couldn't (or wouldn't) pay for her services. But Kathy did appear at the Castro Theater anyway--at her own show. Before you think Kathy was competing we should mention that her show went on at 11PM, giving the GayVN Awards enough time to wrap it up.
Had the awards started on time, there might not have been a time conflict. But there was because the awards show, held at the Gift Center started more than a half hour late. And when it did start Chi Chi Larue introduced NYC drag diva Lady Bunny who did a routine of jokes and singing. Given that this was a California audience, wouldn't Jackie Beat have been more appropriate? Just a thought. THEN, the hosts were introduced--Derek & Romaine of Sirius Radio. As far as we heard there was very little excitement IN the theater side from a drunken presenter or two. No, the real action took place in the elevators where someone was taking polaroids of various presenters and nominees. Let's just say that not many could keep from ripping open their shirts and hamming it up. That might have livened up the awards show.
One of the winners was a no-show. That would be Nickolay Petrov who won for a group scene in the Jet Set Men feature Just Add Water. The reason was something that NO ONE talked about---he's been arrested for assault and attempted murder. By the way, it doesn't sound good for this mob hit gone wrong.
As we mentioned, Jake Deckard and GRUNTS from Raging Stallion were the big winners. Jake Deckard won two awards as performer and actor. There seems to be such a thin line between acting and performing categories, we wonder why they have two. The same for creating an All-Sex category. Aren't most of these films? But the studio that had the midst movies win was actually Titan ! Fear, Folsom Leather, and H20 all won in three categories.
Here's the kicker. Michael Lucas, the star, actor and filmmaker of Lucas Entertainment is complaining---not because The Intern won awards (it came away with four). No, he's complaining on his blog that Gigolo should have won instead. As we reported the stylish film came away empty-handed and he thinks it's the superior film (we wonder how the guys who performed in The Intern feel about being thought of as second favorites). Lucas apparently doesn't want to be argued with on the subject--he just wants answers.
And, as we mentioned there's still one more awards show to go. That's The Grabbys. Every year they're held in Chicago on Memorial Day weekend alongside the International Mister Leather and Bear Pride events. The nominations are still a few weeks away (March 14) but the list of hosts includes Chi Chi LaRue, Honey West,
Jake Deckard, Dean Flynn, and Trevor Knight. In addition there are usually four "Trophy Studs" yet to be announced. Naturally, when we get more info (and nominations) we'll list them here.
