Over the past weekend during the Sundance Film Festival, the GLAAD Media Awards nominations were announced as well as this year's special honorees. In GLAAD's own words:

"The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives. "

In case you didn't know these awards are handed out in FOUR separate ceremonies over the course of three months in New York, Los Angeles, South Florida, and San Francisco. At each of the ceremonies different honorees will be recognized. Special honorees for the New York, South Florida, and San Francisco ceremonies will be announced at a later date.

On March 17 the first ceremony will take place in New York. Special honoree will be Brian Graden, the President of programming at MTV, VH1, CMT, and Logo (which he helped launch). He's #10 on Out magazine's
list of the most powerful gay people in America. A Special Recognition Award will also be presented to cable network BET J.

On April 12 in South Florida the second GLAAD ceremony will honor actor Wilson Cruz who has worked on TV, in films, and on stage and devotes much of his time to the causes of GLBT youth. In addition, The Special Recognition Award will go to magazine The Intelligence Report.

On April 26 in Los Angeles, the third GLAAD ceremony will have three honorees--singer/songwriters Janet Jackson, Rufus Wainwright, and photographer Herb Ritts.

On May 10 the final ceremony in San Francisco will honor activist David Mixner and Ilene Chaiken--the creator, writer and executive producer of the television series The L Word. A Special Recognition AWard will go to the theater group Theater Rhinoceros.

Happily these awards raise almost 4 million dollars for GLAAD's work in "promoting and ensuring fair, accurate and inclusive representation of people and events in the media as a means of eliminating homophobia and discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation". In addition there are over 100 corporate sponsors that support the awards and the group's work and you can find the listing at http://www.glaad.org/media awards.

Wow. Those GLAAD Awards are a lot to take in. I'm so happy to see Wilson Cruz nominated. This is a guy who never really had to have a coming out because he was never "in." I'm also glad they have a comic book category. I haven't read any of those books except for Midnighter. Now I'm motivated to check out the others.
And a big Whoo Hoo for Ugly Betty. I love that show and they kept us going for weeks into the strike. I'm also happy for Oprah. She's done some great gay shows after ignoring us for a few years. She's back on top this year, even doing an amazing episode with Michael Moore on health care.
Looking at these GLAAD Awards makes me realize how much we have to be happy for.

We are a couple of theatre artists from Edmonton, Canada. Our minds were blown to be nominated for a GLAAD award, and now we our popping up in the blogosphere in a list that includes Rufus Wainwright, Bloc Party, Avenue Q, Alan Ball, Terrence McNally, Wilson Cruz, and Midnighter!

    Minds blown.

It was -38 Celsius in Edmonton today. And yet despite the ass freezing weather, we are walking on air.

Thanks for sharing the list, and inadvertently bringing us joy and spreading the love.
