TV Goes on.....

The bad news this week was the studios cancelling tons of contracts with writers and casting further doubt on whether we'll see any more first-run shows from current TV series. In other words it's getting close to the time when the TV season goes into default mode to say nothing of the dim prospects for next season. In addition after the abyssmal ratings of the Golden Globes news conference show, the prospects for the Grammys, the Peoples' Choice Awards, and the Oscars looks downright gloomy.
The good news (for reality and game show fans) is that, as expected, TV networks are continuing to turn to non-scripted shows to fill in the gaps. It's a time where unknowns become celebrities and we're given lots to talk about in our blogs. Look what's happened in this week alone:
American Gladiators has been renewed for another season. Ok, time has not been kind to this show. How is it that a show that at one time seemed futuristic now looks dated? Fear Factor and Dog Eat Dog already worked our last nerves with this kind of competition. The show may have been renewed but our faith in it hasn't been.
Amazing Race is about to reach the finish line. The finale airs this Sunday with three very unexpected teams.
It's been an exciting season (as always) but we were dying for some beefcake and got ZERO! We're sure there'll be many more seasons to come, but please CBS give us more eye candy! The final three teams are lacking in this department.
There's Ron and Christine, the father-daughter team who've butted heads with each other throiught much of this journey. Ron is a control freak, a semi-misogynist dad who has found fault with just about everyone in the race, contestants and innocent bystanders. Christina thinks she's changed her dad for the better, but guess what? She's taken on some of HIS characteristics. Even if these two don't win, they will bethe first father/daughter team to get this far. There's Don and Nicolas, the grandfather/grandson team who have gotten along together, haven't pissed off others and in spite of getting lost several times along the way have wound up in the finals. Even if they don't win Don, who is almost 70 is the oldest to get this far. Then there's TK and Rachel, the hippies from out of time. They've been through a lot this season but show real love for one another. We'd love it if they won even though they've made some bonehead mistakes towards the end.
American Idol started up this week with the first phase of auditions. This is probably the worst portion of this series. The producers just love to cruelly throw untalented nutballs in front of a camera for America to snicker at
and it gets very painful to watch. On the flipside we don't really need to hear all the tearjerking back stories of these contestants. This is a talent contest, not an edition of Extreme Makeover The Home Edition. Talent should be the order of the day, not a tale of woe that makes one contestant seem more "deserving" than another. We aren't going to pretend to make predictions here given how unpredictable this show can be. The most talented often are eliminated and go on to more successful careers than the winners.
Now for REAL talent we caught a clip of Miss Coco Peru and Jack Plotnick in a mini-short on YouTube "The Jizz Party" that's a sequel (of sorts) to one of our favorite un-pc drag comedies Girls Will Be Girls. If you haven't seen this film, you are missing out. It's the story of boozed out faded TV actress named Edie (Plotnick) who takes in two roommates, played by Coco Peru and Varla Jean Merman (both drag queens). The YouTube clips here should give you an idea of what you're in for.
