Kathy Griffin: My Life on the Gay List

It isn't for nothing that we listed Kathy Griffin on our year-end list of Jack Manly favorites. She loves gay culture, she embraces us wholeheartedly as people and fans and her humor is right up (or down if you think about it) our alley. We love her unapologetic dishy humor and her thumbing of the nose to a repressed American society. In short, Kathy Griffin is one of us.

This week, we saw her latest sold-out performance at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood--the home of the Academy Awards and the American Idol finale. Ironic, eh? Naturally, she was right on the money with her observations about current events and politics, celebrity shenanigans, etc. There's no one else around who can recap the latest Britney debacle by brilliantly making us laugh and feel empathy for that poor deluded girl. Dr Phil's sticking his nose in sure helped too. We could go on about the jokes and the humor, but we're sure you'll see this show in a Bravo special late this spring.

However, we're here to share some juicy nuggets that Kathy Griffin herself let spill out of her mouth like glorious pearls of juicy wisdom.

--She's still dating Apple Computers co-founder and multi-billionaire Steve Wozniak. We're crossing our fingers that she's found true love with someone who seems to adore her. Her gentle poking at his geeky lifestyle and persona was peppered with comments that came from genuine affection.

--She's been banned again from The View (at least for now)

--My Life on the D-List WILL return in June with an even longer season. We'll get to see Kathy on a gay cruise
(It starts on Feb 2 and goes to Bora Bora!) and hopefully on her new charitable venture (it hasn't been firmed up yet).

--Since she last did a concert, Kathy has hobnobbed with Anderson Cooper (whom she loves), opened for Liza Minnelli and spent a couple days with he--at Liza's invitation!

--She watches Oxygen and Janice Dickinson but she's REALLY hooked on Bad Girls Club. We just had to watch it on her recommendation and of course our Kathy was right. It's a train wreck of a TV show full of the most unintentionally humorous lowlife women you could imagine--but it's addictive!

--Kathy hasn't made up her mind on the upcoming election but you can rest assured she remains far left of center on just about every issue.

-- Among the names she dished were Oprah, Marie Osmond and the wacky Osmond clan, the Spears family, and right-wing actress Patricia Heaton.

The only drawback to the evening was that Kathy hadn't done stand-up in over a month so she had too much to tell --there simply wasn't enough concert time for her. And of course we don't get to see her hosting the gay porn awards again. Damn!

If any of you get a chance to see Kathy Griffin in concert, we recommend her unequivocally.

Kathy Griffin is always a treat. I want to hear more about her being banned from The View. I had heard that when Sherry Shepard was asking for too much money to be a regular host, the show was going to hire Kathy because she was cheaper. (I read this in Wikipedia so it must be true). All though, why Kathy would be cheaper or more easily available than dim-witted Sherri Shepard is beyond me!

At the show, Kathy Griffin mentioned that she was in the running to be a host on The View, but that she probably wouldn't have lasted. She was booked for January 26, but she has been banned from the show again. Not by Barbara Walters. It was a sort of pre-emptive banning by one of the producers who saw Kathy Griffin: Straight To Hell and thought it was offensive to Barbara.

Don't feel bad for Kathy. She's got a lot of stuff going on for the next season of My Life on the D-List which is going to run longer this year!
