It's A Man's Man's Man's World

Okay, the song is a bit sexist but the title of that old James Brown song is ultra-gay, true? And in a full week of gay TV and gay gossip the title sure seems appropriate.

Are we psychic, or what? Earlier this week we ran a blog about the increasing interest in male models in reality tv programming and behold --we have a new Project Runway episode that features male models. And it was a tough challenge--designing an outfit for former football player and Today Show correspondent, Tiki Barber. Yes, that's his name. He told the designers he wanted a new stylish look with attention given to his body type (thick neck, big shoulders, small waist, bubble butt) and his desire not to be too avante garde.

You'd think that the men would ace this challenge. Oh, but no. As it turned out, NONE of the designers including the men had ever designed for a man before. Designing the outfits and picking out the material was a snap compared to the making of the clothes. No one knew what to do.  It was a sad day to see such a lapse in logic.
It's true  that they didn't get their male models in for their fittings till much later, but why oh why did they not use their fellow designers in the studio for measurements?? Jack, the resident hunk homo, almost figured it out by taking a pair of his own shorts and ripping it apart to get a pants pattern out of it (from now on we'll think of him as "Jack the Ripper"). Jack did share, being the nice guy he is although some designers were a bit peeved. Speaking of Jack, you can see some pretty sexy pics of him (like the one above) at www.franklouis.com

Finally, there were some timing issues and some unfinished outfits that paraded down the aisle. By the way we didn't see nearly enough of male models. Some were sexy, others we just couldn't tell. At the end Jack the Ripper won the challenge AND..Tiki (what's with that name?) wore it on the Today show.

Here's what we took away from the episode:

--Jack revealed (to the camera anyway) that he's poz and has to take LOTS of pills.

--Tiki Barber may be married and with kids but there are some "is he or isn't he?" moments too. He's got an
utra butch wife and he opted for the pink shirt as opposed to the manly colored outfits.

---Steven has the best one-liners and delivery. He's emerged as the show's wit.

---Ricky needs to stop his crying!! It isn't getting him anywhere and  it could be losing him points with the judges

---How did nutjob Elisa dodge a bullet? She has no sewing skills and would barely touch her model --she thought it was inappropriate since she has a man in her life already. Once again we get another glimpse ino her private world of mild lunacy. And yet, she made it though the challenge!

--- Sweet P avoided her own demise by simply admitting her errors as opposed to acting defensive. Advice for future runway smackdowns?

Here's an idea for future celebrity appearances of Project Runway--Kathy Griffin! If there's anyone who would appreciate being on the show it's our beloved gay-man-in-a-woman's body Kathy Griffin. She already has mentioned how much she likes free clothes and she's on Bravo. Perfect cross-promotion. And you KNOW she'd wear the winning outfit. Speaking of Kathy, you must must see Straight to Hell, her newest special on Bravo.

While we're at it, here are a couple more TV picks.

Pushing Daisies. This charming romantic fable just keeps getting better and subliminally gayer. It's all about a sweet pie-maker (who owns a shop called the Pie Hole) with a very unique power--bring the dead back to live. There's a bit more to it than that and you should watch to find out. Created by Bryan Fuller, the gay co-creator of the wonderfully brilliant Wonderfalls (which Fox mishandled and then killed)it stars tall and oh-so-cute Lee Pace (who went transgender for his role in Soldier's Story). There are often some blissful musical interludes and some fab guest-stars such as Paul Reubens (Pee-Wee Herman), gay actor Christopher Sieber and this week Mike White (bisexual actor-writer-producer) . He guest starred with Molly Shannon as candymakers and rivals to the Pie Hole in an episode chock full of goodness including homages to The Birds and Tony & Tina's Wedding.

 Desperate Housewives.
On this week's Dec 2 episode the show gets a blowjob ---Wisteria Lane is hit by a tornado. Sets were destroyed and a characters will die (please please let it be Edie!) in the final new episode until the writers' strike is over.

Will the strike get resolved this weekend?  An offer was made by the producers so we just have to wait and see.
