Carrying a Torchwood
Sexy sci-fi is a pretty good reason to stay in on Saturday night so it's no surprise that JackManly is a big fan of BBC America's Torchwood. If you haven't yet seen the show featuring handsome, bisexual time traveller/alien fighter Captain Jack Harkness (played by openly gay actor John Barrowman), the good news is that the show is in reruns right now and it's BBCA's HIGHEST rate show!
Even better news is that NEW Torchwood shows return to BBCA starting January 26, merely a few days after the entire season one is released on DVD (with 6 hours ef extras) on January 22 (yes you can pre-order it from Amazon through the JackManly Store or click on the link below). Guesting on the new season will be James Marsters (Spike from Buffy) as a time travelling criminal; Ugly Betty's Alan Dale (and Doctor Who's Freema Agyeman.

Speaking of sexy sci-fi here's another reminder about tonight's 2-hour television movie event Battlestar Galactica: Razor on Sci-Fi Channel. It's an original movie that sets up the long-awaited season four (also airing in January) while filling in some of the gaps from season three.
Incidentally, Sci-Fi has also been airing 2 minute Flashback webisodes on its website Battlestar Galactica: Razor that serve as background to tonight's movie. Oh yes, and these clips are NOT from the movie--they're all new and you can catch them on the site for free. From what we've heard this movie is spectacularly complex as the regulars series and might confuse new viewers BUT a story revelation should hook new BG addicts.
If you miss the show, no doubt it will be rerun. Better yet the unrated version will be out on DVD December 4th--which you can pre-order at Amazon through the Jackmanly Store or (hint, hint) click on the link below.

Back to Torchwood, it's a very tasty morsel of fun that's part Dr Who spin-off with an adult flavor and a dash of X-Files. Mysterious Doctor Who character Captain Jack Harkness (played by Barrowman) is the leader of the Torchwood Institute which specializes in investigating supernatural occurrences. His team of men and women are a rag tag bunch who often use alien technology to solve crimes. Always fun, often sexy and well written entertainment.
Here are some other interesting fats and trivia about Torchwood:
--It was created by producer-writer Russell T Davies who previously had revived Doctor Who. Davies also created the ground-breaking Queer As Folk (you MUST see this British version, superior to the American one) and is from Wales. And guess what? The Torchwood Institute is located in Cardiff, Wales.
---The Captain Jack character is a time-travelling bisexual con man from the 51st century who was a companion of Doctor Who and has become immortal. His real name is unkown. He has been portrayed solely by John Barrowman on Doctor Who and will in fact return in a number of episodes of the british sci-fi classic.
--Actor John Barrowman has had a colorful life. Born in Scotland, but raised in America (Joliet, Illinois!) he got involved in musical theater in school (wink, wink) and has happeared in several big productions. You can catch him singing on film in De-Lovely and The Producers (yes that's him as an Aryan singing "Springtime fior Hitler"). He is openly gay and married to architect Scott Gill. Hewas turned down for the role of Will in Will and Grace because he was deemed "too straight". Finally, there's a provocative picture of Barrowman that has circulated on the web for years now. It's as pic of Barrowman's very amply sausage wrapped up in a hot dog bun..BARELY!

Okay, so you won't see that on Torchwood, but Barrowman and the cast of this off-beat series are a delight to watch. Don't miss it!
