Crying and Spitting: Project Runway 4 Episode 2
Again we issue the usual warning for those who haven't seen the latest episode of Bravo's Project Runway 4: there are spoilers ahead. And for those who aren't watching and don't plan on it--shame on you.
That said, we were treated to a fun-fillled, tear-stained, spit-stained episode of the reality show. Who cried the most? Well it's a little dfficult to say but it's clear it was NOT one of the female designers. These girls are tough. The guys? Not so much. It wasn't even a matter of cracking under the pressure of an extremely low budget for the task.
No, the tears were flowing because of the guest judge and "fashion icon" Sarah Jessica Parker.
Granted we really like Sarah Jessica Parker and Sex and the City was near and dear to most gay hearts. But c'mon! When SJP entered the designer's workroom you'd have that that it was 1964 and the Beatles had walked onto the stage of the Ed Sullivan Show. The designers erupted into screams and cheers and thos tear ducts opened like floodgates. Oh, but that wasn't all. Each designer had to personally present their design concepts for her Bitten clothing to SJP. Some were cool under the pressure, others were tongue-tied or gushing and we have to hand to Sarah. She was very sweet and supportive towards every designer even when she had to pick only seven of the fourteen as "finalists" for this competition. Her choices were 3 men and 4 women including.... wacky Elisa?! As we expected these 7 picked their teammates from the 7 remaining. Then the kicker--their budget for their task---$15! AND, it had to be a two-piece outfit. You see, the sporty Bitten clothing line is supposed to be fashion forward without the expensive price tag.
The 7 designers picked their teammmates at random, but poor Sweet P wound up being the last picked and had to put up with Elisa's (we're being kind here) off beat style. Her methods and her thought processes are a tad unorthodox--marking her clothing with spit (prompting a "sign-of-the-cross" from Sweet P), and referring to her design as polymorphic (HUH?) Even Tim Gunn referred to her methods as "coo-coo". After all was said and done,
the design wound up as one of the top two choices! Frankly, we attribute this to Sweet P coming in, picking the colors and cleaning the outfit up with ironing and sewing. Nevertheless the runway show provided the two best moments because ofthis design. They were all aghast over the "spit" routine and Heidi repeated Sweet P's own sentiments about Elisa when Heidi asked "what planet are you from?" Even Elisa's retort was priceless.
The winner wound up being Victorya who got misty eyed before the camera while the seemingly unemotional Marion (yes a guy) with his "Pochahantas" dress got the boot. In between was a somewhat cruel runway critique where Carmen and Steven (the designer partners) were forced to throw their respective designer buds under the bus. Tim Gunn SHOULD be one of the judges but he's the ultimate mentor and we are always impressed with his
ability to critique and motivate simultaneously. Heidi, as host and judge, does a very good job of it all. Sherearely gets personal or nasty. Then there's Michael Kors & Nina Garcia. One bitch on a program is fine--two is one too many. It seems that Kors and Garcia are having their own challege--who can drive a bigger harsher stake into the hearts of the designers.
The hunk element didn't exactly materialize this episode but we have hopes that it will emerge as time goes on.
But we've decided to add a weekly analysis on the guys "watchability"
Those who went up on the hunk-o-meter"
Rami --with his broad shoulders, classy demeanor and slight scruff he's gotten sexier
Steven-- sweet face, lean trim body, and witty remarks pushed up his fortunes
Those whose status didn't change:
Jack-- he pretty much stayed in the background here.
Kevin--straight rocker dude who like Jack just did his job as assistant
Those who went down on the scale:
Christian--just too too pissy and needs tokep his stubborn bitchiness in check
Chris--no his weight isn't an issue--his crying did him in
Ricky--Ricky looks good in a tank top, but like Chris needs to stop with the tears.
Marion--even if he hadn't lost , he was just sad--not titillating.
Next week--more drama on Project Runway.
