Would You Believe...Big Brother: The Winter Edition?

The hot tub may still be lukewarm and the smell of Evil Dick's cigarettes may be lingering in the pile of the artificial grass, but don't be surprised if a new set of houseguests check into the Big Brother house this winter. You read correctly. It's been reported that because of the Writer's Guild strike (which may go on for awhile) CBS is making contingency plans for a new season of Big Brother---possibly a celebrity edition!

The buzz may have started earlier this week but there are rumors that CBS and BB producers started the casting process a few weeks ago when the possibility of a strike loomed closer. There's a good chance that the producers could use applicants that didn't make the cut from this past season or use celebrities who are temporarily unemployed as a result of the strike. We know that the prospect of relatively free publicity for stars or shows that are on forced hiatus (and may be lagging in ratings) will be tempting but we doubt CBS would risk using a cast that could have to leave in case the strike was settled or dealing with prima donnas who aren't such good sports for the kind of lunacy seen on the show.

We think it makes more sense to use realty show celebrities that are already used to cameras following their every move and have "survived" more grueling situations. How about it, Bear Grylls? Reichen?

Big Brother is relatively inexpensive to produce and obviously doesn't require a script. So the possibilties for success may be something that CBS is drooling over. We're thinking it will happen even if the strike is settled in a few weeks. There will still be a gap to fill if shows go back to work and CBS would still air another edition of Big Brother in the summer. It certainly would be interesting to see houseguests on "lockdown" when it's cold outside
(does the Big Brother house even have central heating?)

Of course we'd love to see the strike settled soon since half-seasons of shows like Lost and Heroes would be frustrating beyond words. No amount of male eye candy could ease that pain.

Yikes! With all of this reality TV on it's way, I may have to turn to... books! It's gotten that desperate. There's so much good TV on now (Dexter, Weeds, Desperate Housewives, Heroes, even Law & Order SVU) that I'm going to be extra sad when the plug gets pulled. It was painful enough to have the season finale of Real Time with Bill Maher aborted because of the strike. I have a feeling a lot of people will be turning to Netflix. Looks like I'll have time to check out Rome on DVD now.
