Bye-bye Laughlin, Hello Amazing Race
We can't say we're surprised by the news that Viva Laughlin was cancelled by CBS and we certainly aren't upset because our favorite reality show, the Emmy-winning Amazing Race is waiting in the wings. Here's our one sentence critique of the show: it was a weird jumbled mess of a show that unsuccessfully tried to marry musical comedy to a TV show about a third-rate casino town. We wish Hugh Jackman better luck (and decision-making success) next time.
We're very eager to see the Amazing Race return although we are upset that CBS hasn't been consistent in scheduling a show that has never lost its appeal ---nor an Emmy competition! It's almost as though CBS is like an envious parent whose child is more of a success. Okay, enough griping.
Before we get to the contestants we'd like to put in a good word for our show in the hopes you'll catch it too.
--Amazing Race has been one of the few reality shows that doesn't have people voted off--they're eliminated simply by coming in last at various stops along the race.
---It goes around the world and along the way the racers get to experience (along with the audience) the people and the cultures of nations of which we know very little.
---The contestants are in teams of two, each with a unique relationship to each other--dating, related, married, friends, co-workers, etc. And here's where AR has always been progressive while never making an issue or waving a flag. There have been gay contestants in every season whether they're committed couples, siblings, friends, parent & child, etc. Yes, just like the real world. And over the course of 11 races (including "All-Stars" and "family" editions ) gays have not only been well-represented, but performed proudly.
---There's usually good amounts of male eye candy. Yes, like every reality show hunks and model-types abound so
even if the gay contestants are not our cup of tea or get eliminated we still have some luscious-looking studs that
manage to hang on for awhile.
The new season of Amazing Race starts on November 4 and it looks like the rules are changing again. We'll see
what new twistsawait this very diverse group. They include a Goth couple, two female ministers married to each other,
a 68 year old and his grandson, a guy/girl "friend" couple (we think gay/straight), workaholic father/daughter couple, male/female dating jocks, two LA friends (describing themselves as bitch & bitchy), two sisters, a brother and sister, and two similar dating couples with "laid-back" dude types and strong women-types.
As the season progresses we'll have a "morning after" commentary and we're sure our pre-season favorites and picks
will be shifting as time goes on. Let the race begin!!!
