Captain Kirk, is that a phaser in your pocket?
And Bones is the real McCoy!
As casting announcements continue to be made for the upcoming production of the next Star Trek film, the hunk numbers continue to rise. Star Trek XI (still no real working title) takes us back to the original crew and this week more cast members were announced including super hottie Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and New Zealand hunk Karl Urban as Dr MCcoy (aka Bones, but we're thinking Boner--"Jim, I'm a doctor, not a porn star!") Pines and Urban join recently cast Zachary Quinto (the evil Sylar from Heroes) as Spock and Eric Bana as the villainous Nero. We think the movie, produced & directed by JJ Abrams (Lost, MI3), which chronicles the early days of Kirk and company at Starfleet Academy (another possible name of the film) is shaping up nicely, and we'll definitely be watching.
It's been interesting to see this film take shape over the past few years as several big Hollywood names have been bandied about as casting choices (remember Matt Damon as Kirk, Gary Sinise as Bones and Adrien Brody as Spock?) But the premise of setting the film during the formative years of the Enterprise crew has always been the main focus. Now that studio seems to be going for a younger, hipper (and studlier) caster, they're also going for relative unkowns. Think of it as an intergalactic version of the OC. We've listed the characters and the casting choices along with the original actors who played the roles.
Aside from the casting choices for roles, there are also some other interesting tidbits surrounding the production:
It looks like the plot will be faithful to the Star Trek canon since the film will also feature the character of Chritopher Pike (not yet cast) --the original captain of the Enterprise from the 60s series pilot. In the pilot he wasportrayed by Jeffrey Hunter who died accidentally before filiming on the series began and the character of Captain Kirk was created as a replacement.
Leonard Nimoy is also in the new film playing Spock. Obviously the film may flash forward or flashback to feature Nimoy (maybe as narrator?) We're willing to bet that Abrams may surprise us with some other former Trek cameos.
The JJ Abrams/Heroes/Star Trek connection is mashed up too. Aside from Zachary Qunito as Spock , fans of Heroes may note that the character of Matt is played by Greg Grunberg who has appeared in several JJ Abrams shows & films. We wouldn't be surprised if he also was slipped in to the new film. Original Star Trek alum George Takei & Nichelle Nichols have also been prominently featured.
Okay, so here's that rundown:

Does anyone know if Zachary Quinto is actually gay. He was so hot as Tori Spelling's gay best friend on "So Notorious." But then, when do we actually see a gay actor play a gay role? Not often enough. Either way, he's a wonderful actor and this cast may be enough to get this non-Trekker into the multiplex for this film.
