GLAAD To Have You
Chances are you've forgotten that today October 11 is National Coming Out Day. Sure, you're probably too busy at work and maybe you've already come out to your friends, family and co-workers. Rest assured, GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Allliance Against Defamation) is doing its share to make up for slackers and the timid by releasing 20 second public service announcements (PSAs) featuring 22 figures from movies, TV , and sports. These PSAs are part of a week-long campagn Be an Ally, Be a Friend encouraging the public to be tolerant of those who choose to come out. Approriately enough the first PSA featured actor TR Knight ("Grey's Anatomy") who almost a year ago underwent his own public outing.
GLAAD's campaign "Ally Week" runs from October 14-20 the official website has the simple and heartfelt PSAs as well as vital information and links to a variety of important resources. If you think you need all that you need to know and the work that GLAAD does, a visit to the site will probably surprise you. Plus, you can see the PSAs as they are released.
So far there are four spots that feature T.R Knight, Jerry O'Connell, Marlee Matlin, John Amaechi, Martina Navratilova, Rachel Grifiths, Ana Ortiz, Srar Ramirez, Rebecca Romijn, Eric Mabius, Kate Walsh, Michael Urie, Becki Newton, and Dayanara Torres.
Remember YOU may already have come out, but there are others who have not and need to know that they should be able to without fear of recrimination.

Is GLAAD even relevant any more? I hope so, but I have my doubts. They have a Republican running the organization. It seems like that's a bit backwards for an organization who is in charge of monitoring our representation in the media. Some have said GLAAD has become has gone too mainstream and is just concerned with money and rubbing elbows with the stars and moguls. They are the ones who gave Issah Washington their seal of approval just before he went out and trash talked the "faggots" all over again. Then he gets a sweet deal with NBC and where is GLAAD? According to the Washington Blade, GLAAD has executive compensation exceeding $250,000. It makes you wonder if it's all about the money or the movement.
I hope they still have their eye on the mission.
