Menergy In, Metrosexual Out

While we can’t blame them for trying, we have to laugh at the straight world’s misguided (and self-delusional) belief that they’re setting a trend with “menergy”.

As reported in the mainstream press, menergy is term coined for the style which is the antithesis of metrosexuality. To summarize: a metrosexual is straight male who has embraced the well-groomed, well-dressed look atttributed to gay couture. A metrosexual engages in the activities and more familiar to females and gays (spa treatments, manicures & pedicures, moisturizing, tanning, etc) and dresses in well fitted stylish clothes. Menergy leans more to the scruffy look in clothing & grooming, particularly when it comes to facial hair. It’s what they think is more “manly”.

Well guess what straight people? You’re doing it again! When the straight community lifts a trend from our repertoire of style they never admit it—unless they have no choice.. Thanks to the gang at “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” it was quite clear where metrosexuality originated.  Now straights will have you believe they’re rebelling against this by coming up with “menergy”. Hollywood types are embracing it and showing it off. Should we tell them the truth? Once one of our trends enters popular culture, we’re already at work on a new one!  Once “metrosexual” entered the popular vernacular  we were already growing our scruff. If straights were smart (and non-homophobic) they’d visit bars and gay gyms to catch up on the next trend. They’d save themselves so much time!

The hilarious and ironic part of this so-called new menergy trend is that as they move back to a straighter more manly look, they're using terminology that couldn't sound gayer if they tried. We tend to believe that a double-agent from the gay community gave them the word. Menergy was the name of a popular ‘80s gay disco song by Patrick Cowley and it came to symbolize the high-energy music of that era. Straights would really rethink this term if they saw the cover of these retro disco albums. Their homophobic hearts might stop!

Ah well. I suppose we should just let straights bask in the ignorance that they've come up with a new trend all on their own. Or we could let them in on the what new style we’re cooking up next. Should we tell them that soon they’ll be wearing…..? NAW! They’ll find out on their own soon enough!!
