Where's the plot?
We were reading (gasp!) another blog and the moderator started a discussion about plots in porn films (or the lack thereof). It seemed that most of the comments came back as favoring plot-driven videos as opposed to a compilation of sex scenes. It would be interesting to see what sells better. But realistically we think it's a studio or an actor that sells a film regardless of the plot. If you were a fan of someone like Jake Deckard, you'd probably run out to rent or buy it no matter what the video was about.
It does seem like there are more elaborate films out there from the big studios whether they have heavy-duty plots or not. It's a very competitive market made all the more complex with the growing online market. We're not just talking amateur sites (although that is the biggest factor). There are online rental services, video on demand sites, etc. If a big studio hadn't joined this market they would be doomed. But, as we've seen the amateur sites are getting a big share of the gay adult market.
So how does a studio realistically compete with amateur porn? They try and produce bigger budget films and make sure the audience knows this is the kind of stuff you'll not see on amateur sites. There was a time when competition in male erotica was pretty insular and a film like the plot--heavy "Stryker Force" was seen as innovative. Then there were the Rex Chandler Bondesque thrillers, prison-set flicks, multi-part series etc. Now you have the intricate SpyQuest films, surreal films like Cirque Noir and kinky films like the Link series and Fallen Angel and the upcoming Fear from Titan.
Years ago, there was rarely an adult video filmed "on location" except for occasional trips into the mountains or desert.
On location usually meant filming at a mansion provided by rich gay men. How times have changed. You need only look at the major films coming out of the studios within the next few months to see exotic locales and elaborate sets in abundance.
This is not lost on amateur sites. They're also taking their guys out on location and making their sets more elaborate.
Yes, the competition is fierce in male erotica and at every level it seems some studio or site owner is looking for an actor or a plot device or a film process that will single them out and get your attention. The good news is that fans are the ones who are the winners. Because WE are being catered to, we control the direction of male erotica with our purchases, our rentals and our viewing habits. And we have a voice--in our blogs, in comments to blogs, in e-mails to studios & sites. They WANT to hear what we have to say. The kind of stuff you'd like to see will only be made if you let it be known.
