Beginnings
First off, a few observations about the world of adult gay entertainment intersecting with mainstream culture. Today, while watching a HGTV Curb Appealepisode (yes Jack watches this channel too) we noticed that the featured landscape designer, Michael Loftis was non other than former porn actor Marcus Iron. How strange to see him wearing clothes for such a long stretch of time! It reminded us that it was almost impossible for adult performerrs to make it in other fields of entertainment either during or after their careers in porn. Naturally the doors haven't all flung open for adult stars, but it's not so unusual to see crossovers. Traci Lords, for example, used her adult fame to have a real career appearing in a John Waters' film, guest roles on TV like Roseanne, etc. Jenna Jameson, Ron Jeremy and many others have turned their fame into mainstream bucks. Gay adult actors haven't had it as easy since it is still nearly impossible for them to get into modelling (although a few famous ones have sneaked through) or acting.
The exception is someone that Jack can't confirm nor disavow. But Jack could swear that a fairly big (in fame and "talent") former gay adult print & film actor from the early 80s became an actor fatured in many movie & TV roles including a critically acclaimed gay-themed film from 1990. Lately though, along with Marcus Iron, Colt's Gage Weston appeared (as himself) on Kathy Griffin's Bravo show and Brandon Irons (no relation to Marcus) appeared as Gaston in a revival of Beauty & the Beast.
And who can forget that Gus Mattox has enjoyed a careerbefore, during, and after his adult films as actor/writer/composer Tom Judson. In fact Judson is completely open about his life as Mattox. So is openness the key for adult actors who wish to break through into other entertainment industry roles? No apologies, no regrets?
